How to Buff a VCT Floor?

How to Buff a VCT Floor?
  • Opening Intro -

VCT stands for vinyl composition tile.

VCT floors are soft, resilient floor covers that are installed in homes and businesses.

Other than waxing and washing the tiles, the floors should also be buffed periodically. VCT scrubbing should be accompanied with buffing between waxing and stripping to preserve the shine of the tiles, hide any wear and tear and prevent them from the daily walking patterns. Buffing can be done alongside waxing and stripping, although it is usually done individually as a part of regular maintenance.

Steps to Follow in VCT Burnishing

  1. You need to prepare the floor by sweeping or mopping the dust to eliminate the grit and dirt on the surface. Eliminate stuck-down materials like tar, stickers or gum from the floor using a putty knife. Place a few signs of caution to demarcate the area of work. If it is a dirty floor with spills and heavy soiling, mop it with neutral pH floor cleaner, before drying it completely.
  2. Set up the floor machine with a white and red buffing pad. Floor pads are usually graded like sand paper as well as color coded to mark the level of their grit. Manufacturers indicate fine buffing pads as white, with red being the next grit level. Red needs to be used on scuffed and scratched floors.
  3. Apply shine enhancer or liquid buffing by pouring or spraying it from a spray bottle. Start at one extent of the room, furthest from the entrance before applying the shine enhancing agent in the center. Steer clear of the edges of the room with the initial coating to prevent excess buildup in places which are not frequently treaded.
  4. The buff should then be placed on the floor machine, before turning the machine on. Swing it using small arches across the floor for spreading the buffing and shining agent evenly on the floor. Walk back with the machine moving towards the entrance, applying the buffing material on each new area thus being covered.
  5. Allow the floor to dry and repeat the application of the floor machine and buffing agent. For giving the final coat, spread the agent out to all the corners. If you are planning a final coat after the present one, stop the buffing agent between 6 and 12 inches away from the edges of the room, allowing the floor to be completely dried up until it is no stickier.

Key Pointer: It is very important for any VCT floor maintenance to be scrubbed and swept for mopping. VCT floors need to be mopped and swept on a regular basis to prevent scratching and damaging its look. Mopping should be done with cold water and a neutral cleaner.

If you are using hot water on a tiled floor, the wax may wear off with the mop and make it look cloudy. Do not use strong cleaners. If you are using products containing ammonia or bleach, the wax will completely come off. In the absence of neutral cleaner, use plain cold water before finding a suitable cleaner for maintenance.
