How to Find the Right Carpet for Your New Room
  • Opening Intro -

Nothing compares to the soft feeling of carpet beneath your feet.

Carpet flooring is a great addition to any home.

It is functional, affordable, and provides a safe place for kids to play without worrying about accidental falls.

Although carpet requires a little more maintenance than a hardwood or tile floor, it is very durable and can last through many years of wear.

Carpet can be used in most areas of the house and makes a room feel warm and welcoming.  Different types of carpet work better in hallways, living areas, bedrooms and basements. If you are thinking of installing carpet in your home, or planning on replacing some existing carpet, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Choose a good quality under padding.

Just like any other type of flooring, carpet requires a layer of protection underneath.  This will allow your flooring to have that extra layer of cushion when you are walking across the carpet.  A poor quality underpad will feel thin, and you will feel the plywood underneath.  Carpet padding helps to conceal any imperfections in the subfloor and also acts as a sound barrier.  You can muffle the sound of footsteps on the upper level of your home by installing carpet with padding in your bedrooms.  Most importantly, carpet padding protects your carpet and allows it to stay in excellent condition for many years of enjoyment.

Choose a carpet that suits your lifestyle.

If you have small children or pets, it is important to choose a carpet that is low maintenance, easy to clean, and stain resistant. What sure when the carpet store you choose, has help staff, to help you chose the right carpet. Find out if special equipment will be required to clean your carpet.  Avoid carpets with complicated cleaning requirements that you won’t be able to keep up with.  A carpet that is difficult to keep clean will start to look old very quickly.  A textured carpet will helpful to conceal stains and footprints.  Textured carpets also work well in high traffic areas, such as a hallway or entrance.  They resist wear much better than other types of carpet, and are suitable for a busy home with children and pets.

Dark Shades
Choose dark shades and patterns for rooms that may be susceptible to spills and stains.  Try to find a pattern that you know will suit your style for a long time, and offset it by selecting furniture that is upholstered in solid colours.  Patterned carpet is often used in commercial buildings like hotels and banquet halls because it can withstand years of use without looked worn out.  Be careful not to choose a pattern that is overwhelming in your home.  There are many subtle patterns available in a variety of different colours that will look classy without being distracting.

Neutral Colours
Choose light or neutral colours for small rooms.  Light colours will make the room feel larger and will take the focus off of the floor.  Light shades also work well in rooms that have less natural light.  Installing a light neutral carpet in a basement rec room is the perfect solution to create a warm barrier over a cement floor.  The room will appear large and a neutral carpet will look great with any style of furniture.  Light coloured carpets also work well in bedrooms because they create a calming look for the room.  They are easy to maintain by vacuuming regularly.  It is important that all carpets are vacuumed on a regular basis to release any dust and prevent problems with dust allergies or pet dander.

Warm colours like red and gold make a room feel cosy.

These type of carpets work well in a fireplace room or a library.  Complement the carpet by furnishing the room with dark leather couches and solid wood furniture.  This type of carpet will give the room a classic look and will withstand many years of use.  Reds, browns and rust tones will not show dirt as much as a lighter carpet and will not need to be professionally cleaned as often.  These bold colours are not for everyone, but they can make a statement in the right room.  Choose a darker paint colour, and accessorise with a variety of rustic wood tons to make the most out of this classic style.
