Eliminating rodents from your home is best tackled by a professional, but there are some remedies that you can try first if you’re brave.
Sealing Up Entry Points
The best way to keep mice at bay is to close up all access points to your home. Keep in mind that a mouse only needs an entry about the size of a quarter. Holes can be sealed with steel wool, hardware cloth or caulk. Avoid using sealants that mice can chew through such as wood, plastic or rubber.
Keep the House Clean
Cleanliness is another way to keep the mice away. You want to keep food off of your counters and floors at all times. Make sure it is properly packaged and put away in the refrigerator or pantry. Also make sure there are no easy access holes in your cabinets and pantry as well as rodents often like their easy access to food. The cleaner you keep your home the less likely you will have the pesky home invaders.
Traps
Traps are another possible solution. You can bait a wooden snap-trap with peanut butter, bacon or that leftover pizza. Commercial bait traps are available at most hardware stores. Keep in mind, commercial baits are toxic and must be kept away from family pets and small children. They must be replenished regularly. The downside of using a trap is not for the squeamish: disposal of the carcass.

Deterrents Without Using Poison
There are some homeopathic remedies available. Mice hate peppermint oil placed on a cotton ball around the point of entry. Moth balls in a mesh bag placed near an entry point are also a great deterrent if you can stand the smell.
If you don’t want to use a commercial bait, some folks have success mixing dry oats and raisins with plaster of Paris and placing in an open container where the mice are feeding. Their end is not pretty, but it’s effective.
Sometimes getting a cat will work, but oftentimes our pets are fed well and animal droppings in the yard can be attracting the rodents too.
Eliminate Nesting Areas on the Outside
Areas on the outside and around your home must be addressed. Cleaning up any debris, trimming back bushes, and eliminating hiding and nesting places will make treatment more effective. Outside treatment should include placing the bait stations around the perimeter of your home.
