They may be small, but pests can do serious damage to both your property and your health. Pest control is such an important factor, some people choose home designs that keep pests out.
To learn more about the potential problems with pests we turned to an expert exterminator San Diego residents have been using for more than a decade. The team at Joshua’s Pest Control shared a lot of information and gave us the above seven points to consider.
Damage to the Home
Concern about damage to the home is one of the top reasons people invest in regular pest control services. Termites are the main culprit. Estimates show that termites cause $5 billion in damage in the U.S. every year.
Termites (as well as carpenter bees and carpenter ants) chew into wood causing structural damage over time. This compromises the integrity and safety of the home.
Expense
Pest control is a situation where an ounce of prevention is worth a grand of cure. Using preventative pest control services is much more cost effective than trying to get rid of an infestation.
Homeowners can expect to pay around $3,000 to repair termite damage and get the colony gone. Carpenter bee removal can also be over $1,000 because the bees create a colony inside the walls. Tent fumigation is typically $1,250-2,500.
In addition to killing and removing the pests, you may also have to pay for repair work to fix the damage or to remediate issues so an infestation doesn’t occur again.
Allergies
Millions of people have allergies to insects, and some don’t even know it. Bees are among the most common insect-related allergies. Allergic reactions to a single bee sting can be so severe it causes life-threatening anaphylaxis that requires immediate medical attention.
But bees aren’t the only insect that causes serious allergy issues. For instance, people can be allergic to cockroaches. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America notes that cockroach allergies can trigger asthma attacks. Dust mites can also cause similar health problems.
Biting insects can do more than spreading disease. People who are allergic to fleas and bedbugs will have to deal with prolonged pain, redness and swelling at the bite site. In some cases the bites can cause a severe allergic reaction that’s life-threatening.
Disease
Few people realize mosquitoes kill more humans than any other animal in the world. That’s because they spread vector-borne diseases like West Nile Virus and Zika. All it takes is a single bite to become infected. If you own pets you should also know that mosquitoes are responsible for spreading ringworm, a condition that can kill your pet if it goes untreated.
Ticks also spread disease by biting the people and animals they feed off on. Lyme disease is one of the biggest concerns related to tick bites. The bad thing about ticks is you may get bit and not even know it.
Another larger pest can get inside the home and spread disease. Rats are known to carry a number of diseases and were even responsible for spreading the plague.
Bottomline: pests of all sizes have to be controlled inside and outside of the home to protect your family and pets.

Even if you aren’t allergic to insects and can avoid bugs that spread vector-borne diseases there are other dangers associated with pests.
Spider bites are one of those dangers. Black widows and brown recluses are extremely common throughout the United States.
A bite from a black widow can be deadly if it isn’t treated in time. A brown recluse’s venom causes necrosis in the skin. If left untreated it can kill the skin tissue leaving open wounds that can get infected and scars.
The Ick Factor
Finally, there’s an undeniable ick factor connected to pests being in a home. It’s a major embarrassment for a guest to visit your home only to be greeted by insects. Most bugs are absolutely harmless, but society doesn’t see them that way.
