You may be wondering how termites can do too much damage, given that they are so small.

It's true that one termite cannot cause much harm, even though it can eat 2-3 times it's bodyweight every day.

-------------------------------------

The problem is that termites do not live alone; they live in colonies. Subterranean termites, which often cause the most damage, live in colonies of between 60,000 and 1 million termites.

You can see how this would be a problem if a colony formed in or around your home. This is why it makes sense to have your home inspected for termites every couple of years. If you live in an area where there is a high incidence of termites, inspections may need to be carried out every year, or even  every six months. You can find out more about this.

Termites – The Invisible Destroyer

It’s estimated that $5 billion of damage is done by termites in the US each year and that an average repair bill for a home damaged by termites is $3,000. The reason why such expensive repairs are often necessary is that the presence of termites is not always obvious. They chew away at wooden structures from the inside out.

The Environmental Protection Agency provides advice about how to recognize that you have a termite problem. You may be able to spot signs such as termite tunnels and termite droppings or wings.

Making Your Home Less Inviting

The best way to deal with a termite problem is to stop it from happening in the first place. There are several steps you can take to make it less likely that termites will become a problem in your home.

  • Check the exterior of your property for any cracks ans seal them up, so that access points are restricted.
  • Fix any leaks immediately as termites thrive in damp conditions.
  • Make sure that you do not have any wood to ground contact on the exterior of your property.
  • Keep trees and shrubs away from the exterior walls of your property as they can help to attract termites into your home.
  • Do not store wood, or allow water to gather, close to the exterior walls of your home. Termites thrive on wood and they need water in order to survive.

Do not forget that a regular pest inspection is also an important part of termite prevention. You should find out more info about pest control professionals in your area and ask them to take a look at your property. They will call to your property and check for any sign of termites. If any are present the professionals will carry out an extermination procedure, quickly and safely.

Taking these preventative measures can help save you from the worry and expense of a termite infestation. You should never leave matters to chance as termites can choose any home to invade. Make your home less inviting to them and have an inspection carried out on a regular basis.
