Could newcomers Essentia and Amerisleep bring top-selling Tempur-Pedic to its knees?
Sounds kind of like a game show intro, doesn’t it? You can call it "Battle of the Beds", because that’s what it is. Sales is all-out war, and these three mattress brands are locked in a constant struggle to dominate the memory foam market. But which is the best?
Here, we’ll look at the most important aspects of a good memory foam mattress, and we’ll see which mattress comes out on top overall. Judging by consumer reviews, you can find out which is your ideal memory foam mattress…
A good memory foam mattress should conform to the shape of your body, as the foam becomes more liquid when in contact with your body heat. This means it will make a nice little hole for your body, but a mattress that’s too soft will be uncomfortable and sag in the middle. Without support, back and joint pain is all but guaranteed.
Amerisleep performs about average in terms of firmness and support. The beds are pretty soft, but there’s enough foam beneath the memory foam to make them supportive. Heavier sleepers will have trouble with these beds.
Tempur-Pedic comes in a wide range of models, with beds feeling incredibly soft all the way to incredibly firm. Aside from sagging after a few years, their beds provide average support.
Essentia has a few models designed specifically with back pain in mind, like the Dormeuse. Made to be just a bit firmer than the average memory foam bed, it’s ideal for those with aches and pains.
Winner: Essentia lasts longer than Tempur-Pedic, and it offers firmer beds than Amerisleep.
Comfort is what memory foam is all about. With plush luxury, a soft surface, and foam that conforms to your body, there are few beds easier to sleep in than memory foam. The downside is the heat trapped between your body and the memory foam. It’s hard to sleep well when you’re hot at night, so the best mattresses have figured out how to combat the heat.
Amerisleep outperforms both Tempur-Pedic and Essentia in terms of heat retention, as the design of their beds allows a good deal of body heat to escape.
Tempur-Pedic is the original "hot bed", and their memory foam definitely traps heat near the body.
Essentia designs its memory foam to draw heat away from the body, and the latex used for the core of the bed has holes to allow heat to drain away. Only 5% of users have complained about heat in their Essentia beds – compared to nearly 15% of Tempur-Pedic owners.
Winner: Amerisleep has heat reduction down to a tee. They truly figured out how to eliminate the heat properly.
Amerisleep has just 5 beds to choose from, ranging from soft luxury to firm support.
Tempur-Pedic has nearly 20 beds to choose from – also ranging in firmness.
Essentia has 8 different beds – ranging from medium-soft to medium-firm.
Winner: Tempurpedic, the oldest company out there, has the greatest selection of models to choose from.
Amerisleep offers their beds at a reasonable price point. Their more inexpensive models start around $650, going as high as $2,200 for their luxury beds. However, the simplicity of their beds means they don’t quite make it into the luxury category, and they’re not the most durable beds.
Tempur-Pedic starts their prices at $700, but go as high as $8,500 for their incredibly luxurious beds. Their beds tend to have problems after 7 or 8 years, so you’ll have to replace them sooner than the average memory foam bed.
Essentia prices their offerings from $1,700 to almost $5,000, but their beds last for up to 12 or 13 years – excellent for any memory foam bed! This makes for a first-rate overall value.
Winner: Essentia’s prices may be higher than Amerisleep, but the quality is also much higher than both companies, making it the best value option.
Safety and Toxicity
Memory foam is usually made from petroleum or polyurethane, so it’s loaded with chemicals and toxins. These harmful chemicals can be inhaled, causing health problems. Organic and natural materials are the smart choice, but not all beds use them.
Amerisleep offers beds made with the standard memory foam, which releases some pretty odorous gases when unpacked. Until the bed is aired out properly, the smell is fairly strong. The foam is made using polyurethane and petroleum, so it’s a chemical-based bed.
Tempur-Pedic has had many users complain about the smell of their beds, which lasts longer than the average memory foam bed. The chemicals and gases have also been linked to health problems, one of the things that makes many people look for a Tempur-Pedic alternative.
Essentia uses natural latex – made from Indonesian rubber trees – and natural memory foam – Essentia’s unique patented foam (not bio foam or soy foam that’s just 20% natural and 80% toxic).
Winner: Natural and organic materials are always healthier than chemicals and petroleum or polyurethane-based foam – giving the win to Essentia.
If you move around a lot, you don’t want your partner to wake up with your tossing and turning. A good memory foam bed will isolate motion to just your side, preventing them from feeling your movement. It should also be easy to change positions, move around, and get in and out of your memory foam bed.
Amerisleep has a good motion isolation rating, and it’s fairly easy to get in and out of bed. The lack of firmness may make it difficult to change positions comfortably.
Tempur-Pedic is ideal for back and stomach sleepers, but not so much for side sleepers. The soft memory foam makes moving around a challenge, but the beds are good at isolating motion.
Essentia uses latex for the core of the mattress rather than foam, so the motion isolation isn’t as good as the other beds. However, it’s much easier to move around on this bed than on the other two.
Winner: Amerisleep has better motion isolation, but Essentia is easier to move around on.
The more places a bed is sold, the greater the chance that customers will be able to buy it. Online stores are popular, but a lot can be said for physical locations.
Amerisleep beds can only be found online at their website: www.amerisleep.com
Tempur-Pedic has stores all around the country, and many mattress stores offer Tempur-Pedic mattresses for retail. Purchases can also be made online at www.tempurpedic.com
Essentia has 11 stores around Canada and the U.S., and online purchases can be made at their website: www.myessentia.com
Winner: Tempur-Pedic has been around more than a decade longer than the other two, so they definitely have saturated the market more.
