Growing Your Own Herb Garden

Growing Your Own Herb Garden
  • Opening Intro -

I primarily do all the cooking in my household and I frequently use a variety of herbs, seasonings, and spices when I cook.

I also usually purchase these at the store when a recipe I'm using calls for them.

-------------------------------------

One day when my daughter brought home a basil plant she grew for me for Mother’s Day, only then did I start to think that I could grow my own herbs instead of buying them at the grocery store.

I conducted some research and found out that it actually was quite easy to grow your own herb garden. This also could be a project that I could get my children involved in as well. Here are few tips and pointers to get you in the right direction with regards to growing your own herb garden.

Location

Your herb garden should be planted in an area that is primarily sunny and in an area where there is proper soil drainage. If you do not have an area where your herbs will receive 6 or more hours of direct sunlight, no need to worry, they will still grow, but will need some tender loving care from you in order to thrive. Herb gardens can be grown indoors as well as outdoors. So depending upon your preference and which herbs you would like to grow, you have your choice or where you would like your garden to be.

Which Herbs to Grow?

There are many herbs to choose to grow, but here a few popular herbs that many people opt to grow either indoors or outdoors: basil, chives, dill, parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme. Almost all of these need to be planted in the spring, need ample sun, and need to be planted in well- drained soil. Begin with just a few of your favorites and a few that you seem to use quite often while cooking. From there add a few more each year and you’ll have a beautiful herb garden within a year or two.

Maintenance

Just like growing a vegetable garden there is a bit of maintenance involved, but not nearly as much as a vegetable garden. Keep herbs growing in a weed-free environment. Weeds tend to choke out anything in its path. You want you herbs to thrive and grow, so be sure to get rid of any weeds that may hinder growth. You want ample sun, but not non-stop direct sunlight. You also want to make sure that the herbs receive enough water, but not too much that they may become water logged. Also, when noticing dead leaves and excessive growth it is important to remember to get rid of that type of debris and to prune herbs back.

As you can see with just a few simple tips, it is quite easy to grow and enjoy your own herb garden.
