Removing diseased trees will stop the spread of the disease to other trees, and the spread is slower in winter due to insects and fungi being less active in colder temperatures.
It means that stopping a tree disease from spreading is slightly easier to do in autumn and winter. Disease spotting can also be easier in some cases, such as by analysing the bark and any lesions the tree has. This is true for Dutch elm and for some symptoms or ash dieback.
And when coupled with the added benefits of the tree being easier to access, it makes autumn and winter the ideal time to remove any diseases you find.
Spring Preparation
You should look to prepare your garden for spring in the wintertime, to ensure that everything is planted in good time, ready for blooming when the weather gets warmer. In addition to planting new trees, you should look to remove any problem trees in autumn and winter.
