How You Can Generate Less Food Waste

How You Can Generate Less Food Waste
  • Opening Intro -

Food waste is a much bigger problem than you might realize.

Throwing produce away not only wastes the food itself, but also the resources it took to grow it in the first place –

-------------------------------------

– all of which can add up to serious environmental harm. Not to mention, it’s costing you money too! Shockingly, the US Department of Agriculture estimates that 30 to 40 percent of the country’s food supply is wasted.

So, how can you do your part to cut food waste? Keep reading for some top tips.

Plan your meals and shop accordingly

People often buy more food than they actually need, so if you find yourself throwing a lot of food away then it might help to be more conscious when grocery shopping.

Try planning your meals in advance and only buying the ingredients you need for them. You can make this easier by doing a couple of smaller shopping trips each week rather than one big one.

Get a sink garbage disposal

It’s impossible to completely eliminate food waste from your life. However, one way to stop it from cluttering up your kitchen and making the room smell is to get a garbage disposal for your sink.

This grinds up scraps to reduce odors and bacteria, plus it may result in less food waste ending up in landfills. It’s also a great way to lower the risk of flies and cockroaches invading your kitchen!

Be innovative with your cooking

Getting creative in the kitchen can help to reduce the amount of food you throw away. For example, if you’ve got lots of vegetables that you need to use, then why not throw them in the blender and whip up a delicious soup?

You can also use them in homemade stock or sauces. A quick search online is sure to bring up loads of great recipes for the exact ingredients you have left over.

Keep your fridge organized

Have you ever discovered a withered bag of salad leaves or other old produce at the back of the fridge that you forgot about?

A cluttered fridge can result in perfectly good food going to waste simply because you don’t see that it’s there, so go for a principle of ‘first in, first out’ with yours.

When you buy something new, put it behind what’s already there to ensure you eat the older food first.

Store food correctly

Storing food the wrong way can lead to it spoiling prematurely and therefore being wasted. If you’re not sure whether a particular type of fruit or veg should be kept in the fridge or not, a simple Google search will soon clear up any confusion.

Remember, if you don’t think you’re going to eat something before the recommended date, then you can almost always preserve it for longer by popping it in the freezer.

Embrace imperfect produce

One reason that lots of food gets wasted is because it’s considered ‘ugly,’ and therefore, grocery stores and their customers don’t want it.

You can help fix this problem by buying wonky or otherwise imperfect fruit and vegetables – in fact, many stores now sell these at a discounted price, so you could also save some money with this tip!
