Types of Flooring Options
Ceramic
Ceramic and porcelain tile are common flooring materials used when durability and appearance are important. They’re made from earthen materials, painted or sealed and fired at high temperatures.
As long as they’re properly installed, a tile floor will last for decades. Shapes are normally square or rectangular and tile floor experts “glue” them to the floor with mortar mix. They spread grout between the tiles to hold them in place.
Vinyl
You’ll find vinyl flooring in long, wide rolls to use as sheets, or in individual tiles that are often backed with glue. The grades of vinyl varies, but overall, the product endures for decades.
Vinyl is among the easiest kinds of flooring to install and maintain. It seldom fades and unlike ceramic, provides some cushioning to prevent breakage and injury from falls. Digital photography and printing has broadened the selection available and the image reproduction quality is exceptionally realistic.
Carpet
Until recently, carpeting was one of the most commonly used forms of flooring in homes and some offices. This flooring material provides a cushioned surface that is comfortable for walking or standing.
Carpet provides a degree of thermal insulation as well as muting sounds. It comes in virtually any color and style. It does require frequent cleaning to maintain a new appearance and of all the flooring types, has the shortest lifetime. People with allergies are advised to avoid carpeting because it traps allergens like dust, dust mite waste, pollen and dander.
Laminate
Laminate flooring refers to faux-wood tiles or strips that lock together. Manufacturers use a printing process that replicates the characteristics of the wood flawlessly and it’s often difficult to tell the difference between real wood flooring and laminate.
This flooring is laid over a thin foam layer that provides cushioning that increases its comfort and absorbs some of the noise. Without it, this flooring is often loud to walk on. The beauty of this material is that it lasts for decades, is simple to install and affordable. Like vinyl, it’s useful in kitchens because it cuts down on glass breakage, unlike tile.
You can combine each of these flooring choices into one home or use one exclusively. Each has a long history of solid performance and durability, along with adding an attractive element to your home’s interior appearance.
