It’s sometimes apparent what needs to be changed out on a home, and sometimes you can look at a part of your house and feel like something isn’t quite right, but you can’t quite decide what updates will be the best investment.
Some updates will have a more significant impact than others. To help you determine which projects to tackle first, here are a few renovations projects that will make your home look fresh and new.
Siding
Vinyl siding is amazingly durable, sometimes lasting for a couple of decades or longer. But colors can become outdated, and with new siding, the exterior of your house will look like new. Changing the siding on your home can be time-consuming, so you want to choose a color that will look fresh for many years.
For instance, white is a popular choice that never gets old. And with vinyl siding, it won’t fade or stain like painted metal siding. If you are not interested in adding siding, check out some of our other exterior upgrade ideas here.
Lighting
Both exterior and interior design relies heavily on lighting, so if your current lighting is outdated or not adequate for the space, you can make a big impact by switching your fixtures out for something more appropriate. The right light can make space look bigger and more cheerful. Also, switching out older fixtures will make the area more current. You’ll also save in the long run with energy-efficient fixtures and light bulbs.
Organization
Nothing makes space look more cramped than clutter. For instance, although we don’t usually think of the garage as a beautiful space in the home, you’ll be amazed at how much more you’ll like your garage after you have taken out all of the extra things that you no longer need.
Consider clutter to be your worst enemy. Treat the garage like you would any other room in your home, and create labels for where each type of item goes. You can also buy racks for items, such as bikes and gardening supplies, that necessarily used every day.

The interior of a home can be one of the more challenging parts of your home to update. Types of furniture, lighting styles, rugs, budget, etc. can all heavily affect what you are able to manage.
While choosing what to update, consider using rough guidelines to decide what kind of interior design to choose since house design and personal taste will radically change what you can do. If you are still a little overwhelmed, a popular style to try is mid-century design, which emphasizes minimalism and functionality.
The organization, lighting, and large surface areas such as siding can all make a significant impact on the aesthetic appeal of your home. They can also make the space more comfortable to use. And remember, if you choose your projects wisely, you’ll have the budget and the time to create a home that you can enjoy again.
