There are four types of kitchen cabinets.

Let's break them down to examine the differences in price, quality and customization options.

While selecting appliances seems to be fairly easy for many homeowners, selecting cabinets proves more challenging. To help make sense of some of the choices you have, here are the four different types of kitchen cabinets. Read over each, and then decide based on the descriptions which one would work best for your unique situation.

Ready to Assemble (RTA)

If budget is your number one concern, RTA cabinets could help drastically reduce prices. However, if speed and convenience are your top priorities, RTA cabinets may not be for you.

Here’s why:

RTA stands for ready to assemble, and that term means exactly what it sounds like. You are purchasing an unassembled cabinet in a box, typically from a large retailer. You will be required to assemble the cabinets yourself, and then install them once they have been assembled. It’s a lot of work, and you will need to be pretty handy in order to be up to the challenge. Those who are, reap the rewards of substantial savings on a kitchen renovation.

Quality can very quite a bit, so it is always advised that you read reviews and manufacturer descriptions on any RTA cabinets before purchasing.

Stock

Stock cabinets are somewhat unfortunately named. It seems to indicate an inferior quality product, when that is not always the case at all. Instead, stock merely means that these cabinets are mass-produced, are standardized in size, and are readily available from pretty much anywhere. Certainly, there will be some stock cabinets that are of lower quality, but that does not mean that every stock cabinet will be.

Stock cabinets can also be a great option if you are looking to go with a higher quality material, but don’t mind balancing the cost out with a standard shape and size.

Semi-Custom

Semicustom cabinets will require a jump up in price over your stock cabinets. However, they also offer the customer some customization options, which are not available at all on stock cabinets.

For example, if your stock cabinets seem just a bit too short or too shallow, those kind of adjustments would be possible with semicustom cabinets. For the most part, these cabinets will be standardized, but customers will also have the option of adjusting length, width, and depth by a few inches.

You will also have access to a wider range of materials, as well as more decorative and functional features. If you are looking for a step up in quality over stock cabinets, semicustom cabinets would be able to fill that role.

Custom

Needless to say, custom cabinetry is going to come in as the most expensive item on our list. Custom cabinets allow customers complete freedom of design. Everything from materials, to hardware, to cabinet shape, to function can all be adjusted to perfectly fit the kitchen of your dreams.

Selecting your kitchen cabinets is one of the most important aspects of any kitchen remodeling project.

Cabinets make up the bulk of your kitchen’s look, so you will need to select the color and finish, the materials, the hardware, and any special features you would like.

It can be a pretty big job.

Custom cabinets are often popular in homes with unusual features. For instance, if you have a curved wall in your kitchen, you would require custom cabinets along that wall. Peaked roofs may also call for a bit of custom cabinetry as well, especially if you want floor to ceiling storage in your kitchen.

Of course, you are in control of your kitchen renovation. You may want to go with mostly stock cabinets, with a few semicustom cabinets or drawers added in. Or, you may want the option of customizing the entire job from start to finish. However you choose to proceed with your project, the most important thing you can do is work with a reliable contractor that you trust.
