Bathroom safety should be a priority for every home. If you have young children or old people at home, you may need to take extreme safety measures, to avoid bathroom accidents or deaths.

Safety devices

  • Ensure the bathroom doors are wide enough. If you have elderly people who use wheelchairs, it should be at least 32 inches wide.
  • Door knob – You may consider replacing the door knob with a push button to make it easy for the elderly person to open the door.
  • Bathroom floor – A non slip floor should be put up or you can place non slip mats on the bathroom’s floor.
  • Taps – All hot water taps should be insulated or simply have anti scald devices to prevent burns.
  • Lock – Install a lock that can be opened from outside while locked from the inside. This makes it easier to get inside the bathroom in case someone becomes unconscious while inside.
  • Emergency alert – Install an emergency buzzer in the bathroom so that the elderly person, a child or anyone else can alert the household in case of emergency.
  • Grab bars – Fix strong grab bars that will support the bathroom user’s weight. Do not use the towel rail or rack as a supplement for grab bars, they can cause fatal accidents if they break.
  • Raised toilet seat makes it easier to use.
  • Sink – Raise the sink to a comfortable level, where the user will not need to bend or strain while using it.
  • Back bench – When living with the elderly, a back bench may be fixed in the bath tub. However, you may need to consult a doctor on the appropriate back bench, depending on the elder person’s condition.
  • Hand held shower head – Hand held showers allow everyone to wash their hair easily, as well as bathe with ease.

Lighting

  • The bathroom area should be well lit, with easily accessible switches that are well insulated to prevent shock. Ensure good quality lighting bulbs that are neither blindingly bright nor dim.

Bathroom shoes

  • While buying bathroom shoes, avoid shoes with sleek soles, the shoes should not have a raised sole or heel.

Drainage

  • Ensure the drainage is well fixed, well functioning outlets. The floor should be made of materials that easily dry. Poor drainage can make even the safety floors very dangerous.

Corners

  • For safety, avoid sharp corners in the bathroom. The corners should instead be rounded to minimize accidents.

Other safety measures that you may require to take in case you are living with elderly persons is taking them for a regular eye check up. Put their medication on an easily accessible position and ensure adequate space in the bathroom, a squeezed up bathroom is a recipe for disaster.
