In the Know: Estimating the Cost of Your Kitchen Remodel

In the Know: Estimating the Cost of Your Kitchen Remodel
  • Opening Intro -

In many ways, your kitchen is the heart of your home.

Therefore it makes sense to create the most functional yet inviting space possible.

That may involve remodeling at least part of your kitchen. If you’ve decided to take on the task of a kitchen remodel, having a reasonable estimate of the costs can help you obtain the best possible quality within your budget.

Calculate Costs and Percentages

As a rule of thumb, you should allocate 40 per cent of your kitchen remodeling budget for cabinets. Another 30 per cent should be allotted for appliances, with an additional 10 per cent each for countertops and flooring. The remaining 10 per cent should be split between lighting and plumbing fixtures.

Costing kitchens is very much dependant on the kind of kitchen one has in mind. You will need to plan the size of the kitchen, the kind of materials you want to use and the fitting installation costs. There are online services that can help you calculate labor costs. This process is bespoke, requires a lot of planning and leaves room for a lot of costs that will remain unforeseen and will reveal themselves in the process.

You can enjoy significant savings by taking advantage of kitchen offers from high quality suppliers. You can also save money by doing part of the work yourself. On the other hand, if your remodeling job requires major rewiring or reconfiguration of your plumbing, your overall budget will increase significantly.

If your appliances are more than a few years old, chances are they are more expensive than you realize. New appliances are much more energy efficient, which translates into significant savings on your monthly electricity and gas bills. However, if your budget is tight and your appliances are fairly new and in good working order, you can save money by keeping them. Unless your remodeling job involves built-in appliances, you can replace appliances at a later date fairly easily.

Lighting is often overlooked in a kitchen remodeling scheme, but good lighting can illuminate cutting surfaces and provide an inviting ambiance over dining areas. Track lighting is a fairly easy addition, while recessed lighting may require somewhat more complex installation. Whatever you do, avoid that old, cold circular florescent light that was all too common in old-school kitchens.

If your cabinet frames are basically sound, you can save considerably and still achieve a fresh, new look by replacing doors and drawer fronts. However, in many kitchens, cabinets are built on site, and often have no backs. In such cases, you must bite the bullet and purchase new cabinets – or resign yourself to living with the ones you have, perhaps painting the doors to give them a new look.

Granite countertops are durable and good looking, but also expensive. Other materials to consider include laminate and quartz. Whatever your budget, choose the highest quality materials you can afford – your countertops endure a lot and you’ll be living with them for a long time. If you must compromise on costs, you can wait on installing faucets and backsplashes, which are easily installed at a later date.

Plumbing and Gas

If your basic kitchen wiring and plumbing are sound, these items won’t represent a major expense in your remodeling budget. However, if your wiring or plumbing is not up to scratch, or you’re making changes in the reconfiguration of your kitchen layout, the costs can add up quickly. Even seemingly minor changes, such as adding new electrical outlets or switches, can be surprisingly expensive.

Flooring represents another area where compromises can be made to save money. While upscale surfaces such as stone or hardwood are popular and good looking, substitutes such as laminate and sheet flooring require little upkeep and look almost as good as more expensive surfaces. If your budget is really bare bones and your floors are in good shape, you can skip this item altogether.
