One of the best ways to update an old kitchen is to give the countertops a facelift. Old, cracked or even broken countertops will be the first thing people see as they step into your kitchen, but you don’t have to spend a ton of money replacing them. Instead, the following three options are a great way to spruce up a kitchen without spending all of your savings.
1. Tile
Using ceramic tile on a countertop is a cheap way to bring new life to an old look. The best part is that it can also be a DIY project, which will save you even more money. The best thing about ceramic tile is that it’s durable and it comes in many different colors, sizes and designs, so you can be as plain or as decorative as you like. Plus, ceramic tile comes in many different price ranges, making it the cheapest kitchen countertop option available.
The downside to ceramic tile is that if you opt to do it yourself, you will need to learn how to tile first. This can be done by watching videos or reading how-to blogs, but any major mistakes will be seen, so it’s important to take your time and know what you’re doing.
2. Laminate
Many updated kitchens use laminate countertops for many reasons. First, they’re durable. Second, they’re extremely cheap. And third, they come in a variety of colors and styles, allowing you to easily choose the best countertop for your decor.
While laminate is durable enough to last you years of use, it can still be damaged, so it’s important not to use knives on laminate countertops without a proper cutting board, and don’t set any hot pots or pans directly on top of the laminate surface, as it could erase some of the color.
Laminate countertops come in different types too. You have your basic run-of-the-mill laminate that is extremely cheap, or you have a stronger laminate option, which is much more durable and comes in nicer finishes.
You can buy laminate by the square foot and have it installed in your home by professionals or you may be able to find a bargain by looking at the scrap pieces at your local hardware or home improvement store. If you don’t have a big area of countertop, these scrap pieces will be significantly cheaper than new pieces, but you’ll have to install them yourself.
3. Butcher Block
Butcher block is the priciest of the three cheap countertop options, but it is significantly less than granite or other stone-based countertops. Butcher block is extremely durable and can give your kitchen some pizazz. Plus, since butcher block is made for preparing food, you can chop, cut and dice anything you want wherever you want without worrying about damaging your countertop.
So if you desperately want to replace your old countertop but you don’t have the budget for a granite or marble, opt for laminate, butcher block or tile. All of these items look great and will give your outdated kitchen a must-needed facelift.
