1. Remove Stumps and Clutter
Stumps, yard debris and broken yard ornaments can make the landscape appear unkempt, no matter how many attractive plants and designs you add. Take care of stump removal and tidy everything before you renovate your landscape.
2. Add a Variety of Color
While it is all right to choose one plant or flower color as the predominant one, this will become boring very quickly. Make sure to add several colors throughout to keep it interesting. This can mean simply adding a few flowerbeds that contain multiple colors, or adding colorful statuary or outdoor art.
3. Use a Variety of Texture
Texture is something novice designers rarely think about, but all professional landscape designers know that texture makes a big difference. Are all of your plants and flowers smooth-leaved or too similar? Examples of landscape textures include fuzzy leaves, thick leaves – like those of succulents – jagged edges, smooth edges, shiny leaves, stone, brick, pavement and river rock. By adding different textures, you are giving the eye something new and interesting to process.
4. Plant for All Seasons
Your region will dictate what you can successfully grow. However, no matter where you live you should try to plant both annuals and perennials as well as a few evergreen and other plants that will maintain some color through fall and winter.
5. Add Unique Landscape Architecture
Small ponds and footbridges are just two examples of additions that add character to a yard. Pergolas, outdoor lounging areas, fire pits, putting greens and much more can be added to create a beautiful outdoor living space. It is helpful to imagine your yard as an extension of your home and bring elements of indoor living outside.
6. Create Themes
Get creative with your landscape and work around one or more themes. Examples could include the classic garden designs, such as French or English, or more contemporary pop-culture designs, such as Disney-themes, mythology themes or any you can imagine. A fairy garden is one popular one, for example. Small fairy statues, hidden messages engraved in stones, tiny doors placed on trees and other whimsical decorations add to this fun theme. If you have children, invite them to help you come up with fun ideas for landscape decorations.
7. Make Use of Vertical Space
Ivy-covered walls, vertical herb gardens and fountains are some examples of using vertical space in the landscape. Using vertical space is extra important if your landscape is generally flat, which can feel monotonous. Vertical fixtures create exciting visual breaks.
Take your time when creating your new designs. It is best to view it as a lengthy project and not something you will accomplish in a few days. You want to make sure that your yard looks good and turns out the way you want to, if not better than you expected. A great landscape takes some time and effort, but you will thank yourself at its completion.
