There are many, many annoying aspects of moving and packing, but there are also some handy things you can do to ease these annoyances.
1. Taking Apart and Reassembling Furniture
It’s hard enough to move heavy pieces like beds and dining tables without hurting yourself or scratching them. But having to take them apart and reassemble them? Hire a service for that. 2. Packing Clothes
This is especially unfun if you are a clotheshorse with a closet full of items. Instead of taking individual pieces off their hangers, folding them and putting them into boxes, do the opposite. Leave the items on the hangers and wrap an outdoor trash bag around them, leaving the hooks sticking out. This will make them easy to spot among your other belongings, and there is minimal prep work when unpacking.
3. Toys and Kids’ Stuff
Remind your children that they are going to be without all of their toys for a little bit while you unpack and get the new home in order. Give them a small box and tell them to pack whatever they think that they can’t live without for a week or two. This takes the pressure off of you by not being the bad guy if you fail to pack something important to them. Plus, they will be excited to be included and it gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility.
4. Necessities and Daily Use Items
You use things like your coffee pot, Q-tips and paper towels every day, and you definitely don’t want to part from them any longer than you have to. Create a special “day of the move” box and put all your must-haves inside of it. Either pack it last in the moving truck to be unloaded first, or keep it with you in your car.
