Here are the steps that you need to take in order to have a dry basement all year long.
Evaluate Your Options
Where the water is entering your basement makes a big difference in how you go about combating it. A high water table could mean that your basement is below grade and needs a more permanent solution to alleviate the issue.
If the water is coming from your downspouts, you can solve your problem by having them drain farther away from your foundation or to the street.
Each water source entry point will have slightly different options when it comes to sealing your basement.
Remove Water Sources
Preventing water from pooling at the foot of your foundation is a good first step to take in the sealing process. Sloping your landscaping and tackling drainage issues will help with this particular problem.
A sump pump is another good option as a preventative measure, should you need it. Installing a secondary sump pump and a battery backup will ensure that your basement is dry no matter the situation.
Your sump pit needs to be below the level of your flooring by several inches to prevent encroachment. Be sure that when you water your lawn that water isn’t getting underneath your foundation, this can cause lots of potential problems.
Seal All Water Out
Even a little bit of moisture could cause mildew and mold to form. Sealing your basement floor and walls with basement waterproofing products will keep it from entering. There are a variety of options available. The basic idea is that you need to plug the holes and gaps that are allowing the water to get into your living space.
Many of these products are specially patented and use a plastic resin or even rubber base to prevent leaks. Do anything you can to keep water from entering your basement, water can cause so much damage very fast.

Invest in Drainage
Drainage is imperative so that the water doesn’t build up underneath your floor and seep into your basement. One solution is to use a perimeter drainage system that empties into your sump pit. For larger spaces, you may need to install piping in the middle of the floor underneath the slab. The point is to drain the water to the lowest point of the space and get it outside via your sump pump.
Getting the correct drainage for your water problem is absolutely essential. Be sure to do whatever you can to make this happen, as the life of your home may depend on it. Your home is an investment, after all.
Stopping water before it has a chance to get into your basement means that you need to know the root cause. Use these tips to tackle your water issue and protect your investment.
