A flooded basement is a nightmare.

Once you overcome the shock of what has happened, there are lots of things to consider.

-------------------------------------

In order to protect the rest of your home, you have to take certain measures to get it cleaned up. Here are some of the steps you’ll need to follow in order to stay above the water and avoid any subsequent damage.

Practice Safety Techniques

One of the first steps when it comes to the cleanup process is to switch off the power before you go into the basement. Electricity and standing water don’t mix well. Taking the necessary safety steps will ensure that you can start work on the project without having to pay a visit to your local emergency room.

Remove the Water

Depending on the layout of your basement, you can remove the water in a variety of ways. The easiest solution is to pump the water out of your basement. In some instances, it may be to your benefit to look to installing a permanent pumping system, such as a sump pump. This will help to eliminate future incidents in which your basement becomes flooded.

Haul Out Wet Items

Removing all of the wet items can seem like a monumental task, as the process includes more than just your belongings. This may also include carpeting, drywall, and other types of finishes that can hold the water. Depending on the degree of damage, it may leave your basement being stripped down to the studs. Consider renting a dumpster so that everything doesn’t end up piled in your yard waiting for disposal.

Dry Out Your Basement

It’s essential to completely dry out your basement. Using an air mover or a dehumidifier can help to eliminate those last traces of water. You need to take the time to ensure that this step is completed thoroughly. Any water that’s left behind could cause your new finishes to become damaged. You don’t want to have to redo it again just because you didn’t do it right the first time.

Spraying the affected area with mold preventing solutions is the last step that you’ll need to take before you can start the rebuilding process. This is generally a bleach solution that will inhibit the growth of spores that may still be residing on the surfaces.

To make it easier, you may want to use a weed sprayer so that you can get more even coverage with the solution.

There’s a lot of work that’s involved with recovering from a flooded basement. You may want to work with a basement remodeling company in order to get the task completed. Following these steps will ensure that you can recover and protect the rest of your home from water damage.

Note:
It’s always a good idea to place appliances such as laundry, refrigeration and other delicate items that you have in the basement on wood pallets. In the event the basement floods again, these items will protected.
