The question is: Do you have the proper tools? Here are four that get the job done.
A Basin Wrench
This wrench is invaluable when you need to get at those hard-to-reach bolts that hold the faucet to the sink deck. It has a long shaft with different sized jaws at one end. One jaw is fixed while the other is able to move. At the other end is a handle. When the jaws clamp on a fastener and you turn the handle, the grip and the torque on the fastener increases, which allows it to be loosened or tightened as needed.
This torch is used to fuse together metal pipes and fittings by melting solder between them. To solder a joint properly, the pipes must be completely dry and clean and treated with flux, a substance that keeps the metal from rusting and absorbs any impurities. If you are a bit wary of using a torch to fix your plumbing, don’t hesitate to call for plumbing services.
The Stillson wrench is what most people envision when they think of a wrench. It is designed so that can rock even as its toothed jaws grip tighter and tighter on soft metal. Stillson wrenches are best used on round pipes and fasteners, but if there’s a hexagonal nut that has gone round due to wear, the Stillson can be used to simply break it off. Stillson wrenches come in several sizes and are made of aluminum or steel. They tend to be pricey, but fortunately they can be repaired with new jaws or teeth if they break.
A plunger is such a simple and ubiquitous tool that it is tempting to not mention it. But its ubiquity is why it is so important. Plungers are the first line of defense in loosening clogs in toilets, tubs and sinks, and they work well a good deal of the time. This is especially true if there’s a couple of inches of water in the sink or tub, for the water compresses and brings force to bear against the clog.
These are only four of the tools that are most useful if you want to fix a plumbing problem. You could buy dozens if not hundreds more tools, but most of them you’ll probably never use. Whatever tools you buy, get the best ones for the money.
