Even if your current appliances work fine, newer ones might match the renovated look of your home or may have better energy ratings.
Air Conditioner
Whether you have an air conditioner for one room or a central system, both can suck energy during the summer months when you’re trying to stay cool. Air conditioners use an “energy efficiency ratio” to determine how well they perform their tasks.
A higher EER means a more efficient system. While some basic maintenance such as filter changes and duct cleaning can improve your current air conditioner’s efficiency if it is an old model, it won’t reach the same level as the newer iterations.
Tankless Water Heater
If you currently use a water heater that has a tank, you should check out tankless water heaters. A tankless water heater may use up to 50 percent less energy than water heaters with holding tanks. This increase in heating efficiency translates into big savings for you.
A tankless unit will heat water only when you activate the faucet without needing to hold hot water in reserve. These heaters attach to your wall and are usually easy to install. The initial cost for one of these units can be high in some cases, but the overall savings you will enjoy will make up for that.

Furnace
Your home’s furnace is a big item that uses ductwork to function properly, so it is a good idea to see if updating it can improve your renovation project. Depending on how old your furnace is, it may not have a way to store or exchange heat.
The pilot light might be continuous instead of using an electronic ignition sequence to start only when you need it. Checking out your home’s furnace also gives you the perfect excuse to take a look at all of your ducts and vents to see if you can make any improvements in those areas.
Refrigerator
Refrigerators have received a huge bump in efficiency over the past several years. If your refrigerator is more than 10 years old, take a look at newer models that will almost certainly be more efficient. If you have a fridge with a freezer compartment that sits next to the refrigeration unit, you should consider upgrading to one that has the freezer on top instead.
These are just four common home appliances that could improve your renovation efforts. Find out how old your models are and see if newer versions would look or perform better in the new home.
