Water features don’t absorb much sound, but the noise it creates can certainly overshadow the unpleasant sounds present in the surroundings.
Noise Control Options
Water based noise control options such as fountains, cascades, pools, and waterfalls can also be used for landscaping spas, roof top gardens, and parks. Conventional noise control options such as plants, carpets, and stones either absorb sound or deflect it.
Most of the contemporary small and large sized fountains that are used in the gardens create a sense of serenity. Cascading waterfalls and fountains are popular options for interior as well as exterior decoration.
The transparent stream that falls from above into the placid lake below is actually an artificial one. Unlike the natural water falls, the stream is narrower, and the pool below doesn’t rise up in mist.

How Water Noise Reduction Works
Fountains, waterfalls, and cascades make sounds. These sounds distract the attention of the viewer from the noise that surrounds the place. During night time, lights with colors and music around the cascading water can have similar noise reducing effect.
It’s also possible to organize the existing landscape so that water can flow on a raised level in the garden. The water will then fall straight down into any artificial pond or river. A similar addition to the interior with a water collecting unit at the bottom can make the room feel a lot cooler than it is. Inside rooms, it is possible to use carpets to reduce noise. But externally, unpleasant sounds can only be replaced, reflected, deflected, or absorbed.
Apart from being effective tools for noise control, fountains and water bodies in and around homes and offices can help the mind to relax, bringing down stress levels. Such images are used in Japanese and Chinese cultures for calming effect. They also bring in positive feelings.
Much depends upon where and how such objects are added. It’s necessary to install such cascading and lively water fountains in a place where most people can see them. The sounds from waterfalls or fountains become an integral part of the visual image they present. For the best effect, these water features should even be visible from most rooms.
