  • Opening Intro -

The dog days of summer are upon us, forcing us to decide whether to lower our utility bills or to stay cool.

Fortunately, there’s a way to do both.

-------------------------------------

Here are four tips to help you lower your summer cooling costs without sacrificing your comfort.

  • Filter Changes

Regularly changing your AC filters is one of the easiest ways to lower your summer cooling bills. Dust is your AC unit’s worst enemy, and keeping it out of the works is crucial to getting all the cooling power you can for the amount of electricity used. Clean intake filters allow your cooling system to provide better cooling with less energy. The EPA’s ENERGYSTAR program suggests you change the filter at least once per month.’

  • Maintenance

Preventative maintenance can significantly lower your cooling bills by allowing your unit to provide peak cooling with minimum electricity. A preseason tune-up is best, but anytime is a good time to give your unit a checkup. While maintenance costs are always money well-spent, you can shop around for preventative services and save even more.

  • Some companies, like HELP Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric, offer low-cost monthly memberships that include an annual tune-up and other perks and discounted services.

  • Fans

Circulating air makes a room feel cooler. Installing a ceiling fan will allow you to adjust the thermostat upward two to five degrees, and you won’t notice the difference. Since a ceiling fan uses less than 100 watts compared to your HVAC’s 3500, using a fan to help your unit run less can save you a lot of cash.’

  • Install a Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats give you the ability to control the temperature of your home from anywhere you can get Wi-Fi. Increasing your home’s temperature by 10 degrees while you are away during the day can save ten percent on your energy bills.

A smart thermostat can be programmed to cool your home in time for your arrival, so you never experience a house at 85 degrees when you prefer 75. The W-Fi allows you to change the thermostats settings with your changing schedule. Some smart thermostats are voice activated, motion controlled and can be programmed to learn your cooling patterns and anticipate them.

Taken together, these tips are a powerful way to keep your family cool without taking out a second mortgage. Over the course of a year, your savings could add up to the equivalent of an entire month’s utility bill.
