Easy Fixes for Green Home Renovations

Easy Fixes for Green Home Renovations
  • Opening Intro -

Society has evolved significantly on environmental issues.

No longer ignoring the impact of carbon footprints, more and more people are looking for ways to use energy more efficiently and to create domestic living space that responds to its surroundings in a more Eco friendly way.

-------------------------------------

Efforts of homeowners to create a truly green space are aided not just by advice from green advocates, but the government as well. Energy Star, a collaboration between the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency has produced numerous recommendations on how to make the house more energy efficient.

A greener, less energy consuming, house can result from using better appliances. Refrigerators and dishwashers that are over twenty years old require considerable amounts of energy to operate. Replacing these old dinosaurs with newer models that do the job on less electricity will not only be a greener idea, but will also save the homeowner a fair amount of money in utility bills. The same is true for fuel-efficient light bulbs. These will cost a little bit more than the ordinary ones found on the shelf, but fuel-efficient light bulbs provide the right amount of luminance and have a far longer lifecycle. Dimmer switches also reduce energy use without sacrificing any convenience at all.

There are quite a few ways to create a greener, more efficient, home to live in. This could include fixtures such as low flow toilets and showerheads. Replacing old windows with newer double pained models or replacing the HVAC system in the house can be a fairly sizable investment. It’s a great idea to check and see if the products carry an Energy Star rating. The ratings is a good assurance that what is purchased will be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly at the same time.

Routine maintenance of any HVAC requires a replacement of old filters. Doing that allows the heating and ventilation to do a better job of keeping the house comfortable. Adequate insulation once installed will keep a house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer without jacking up the utility bill. An empty nester may discover that parts of the house not being used are still being heated. Space heaters and baseboard heaters can easily keep such areas as warm as needed.

Houses do need home improvements such as replacing a cabinet or a door. These DIY projects can be environmentally conscious if the homeowner uses recycled construction materials that will do the job and save the trees. The US Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency both have a number of tips and ideas to be used to create a greener living space. In fact, homeowners may be eligible for grants that will allow them to take an older home and create an environment that uses less carbon energy, and better protects the natural surroundings.

Homeowners are sometimes hesitant about any green improvements because they are afraid of the cost involved. It’s true there is an upfront cost but there is a long-term benefit. It has been proven numerous times that a more energy-efficient house is not just Eco friendly, but also results in lower utility bills in the long run. The green changes to the house will not only pay for themselves but provide sizable cost savings over time. On top of that is what these changes do for the good of the environment. Leaving a smaller carbon footprint does a lot to keep global warming under control and reduce pollution. When a homeowner takes a look at the savings to the family budget and the benefits to the environment, it becomes pretty obvious that creating a truly green house is definitely worth any cost.
