Clean Around the Compressor
The central air compressor is outside your home. It creates the cool air that comes through the ducts and enters your home. If you turn the system on and don’t feel the effects immediately, you may need to check this area.
Before it gets toasty outside, remove all dirt, debris, twigs, and leaves accumulated in the compressor. From autumn and winter alone, there will be a lot. Routinely inspect this area throughout the summer because one cleaning will not be enough.
Check the Filter
The filter in HVAC systems has the short end of the stick. It collects all the dust and airborne particles. And if you haven’t checked on the filters all winter, you can believe there will be plenty accumulated.
Depending on your system, you may need to replace the filters completely or clean them. This is one of the easier maintenance tasks. How often you change the filters also depends on the type of system you have. Some systems require a change once a month, every six months, or once a year. That will also determine how often you check the filter during the summer.
Clean the Vents
How often do you clean the vents? They’re one of those overlooked areas in most homes. Dusting them from the outside won’t get the job done either. You need to remove the covers of the vents from the floor and ceiling.
Place them inside a bucket of warm water with a splash of detergent and bleach. Some of the dirt collected in the vents will be visible, and some won’t. A good soaking inside the bucket will help lift most of that dirt. Scrub away the rest with a scrubber or brush. Place the vents on a rag or towel afterward to dry completely before reinstalling them.
Call the Experts
Even with all your work, sometimes, the best way to ensure your HVAC system is ready for the summer is by calling the experts. Schedule your yearly professional AC tune-up. A technician will come out and see if there are any areas you’ve missed.
Run through your HVAC checklist before calling their services. This will save them the trouble of addressing unnecessary sections. If there is a problem with the system, they’ll find it much faster with your report.
There’s nothing worse than turning on the AC during the hottest day and discovering it doesn’t work. Save yourself from this fate by preparing your HVAC system for the summer.
