Remember to Budget for These 5 Things Before Your Remodel

Remember to Budget for These 5 Things Before Your Remodel
  • Opening Intro -

If you are thinking about starting a home remodeling project, then you are probably prepared to live with a mess for a few days.

You may have carefully budgeted to pay for the project, and you might think you have found the perfect person to do the work.

Yet, many home remodeling projects run over budget because of these five things that people forget to budget for before starting their project.

Taxes and Shipping

You have carefully figured out what materials you want to order to complete the project. You have researched different buying options and have figured out what options are the most cost effective. Yet, if you are like many people, you forgot to budget for taxes on those items. Additionally, you should factor in shipping charges.

You will need different permits, depending on where you live. In some locations, you may need a permit if you change a load-bearing wall, a fence or the home’s roofline. In almost all communities, you will need a permit to work on plumbing and electrical systems. In some areas, you need to get a permit to haul off the trash from a remodeling project.

Packing and Storing Your Things

It does not always work to just move the things that you are keeping during a remodeling project. Therefore, you may need to budget for packing your things into boxes securely. You also need to budget money to cover the cost of storing your belongings in a storage facility.

Eating and Housing

One of the most common rooms to be remodeled in a home is the kitchen. Yet, many people forget to budget for eating out while their kitchen is being remodeled.

Additionally, regardless of the room you are remodeling, the dust, dirt and grime can take a toll after a while, so you may want to budget for a hotel stay. This is especially true if the job requires turning off water or electricity.

Bringing Your Home Up to Code

Many homeowners get an unpleasant phone call from their contractors telling them that they have located a problem, and the home must be brought up to code before work can continue. While the contractor is just protecting his right to practice in the city and you want your home to be safe, these unexpected surprises can add to the cost of a remodeling project.
