How to Successfully Combine Traditional and Modern Design

How to Successfully Combine Traditional and Modern Design
  • Opening Intro -

When designing any space, the majority of people believe that they should pick a certain style and stick with it ‘till the end if they want to end up with a beautiful interior.

However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

-------------------------------------

The secret of a truly breathtaking interior design actually lies in successfully combining two (or more) styles to highlight both of their best features.

When decorating your home, you want to aim at creating a space that is personal and unique. This means that you should never stick to a single style (not unless you are absolutely mad about it). Rather, find the best combination of styles that will allow you to translate your own uniqueness to your interior design.

If you are not sure how you can do that successfully, we will present you with some tips regarding mixing the traditional and modern design to inspire you to inspect this trend even further. Check them out.

Choose your main player

When combining styles, you first need to decide who your main actor is. Do you want your interior to be primarily modern or traditional?

Choosing a dominant style is crucial because you don’t want them to be fighting for equal rights, but rather working together to create a cohesive environment and only accentuate each other’s beauty.

Once you determine your dominant style, you will be left with mostly traditional or mostly modern space with only the accents from the other style.

Identify what makes it appealing

Once you decide on your preferred style, you need to identify why you find it so appealing. Is it because of the shapes and ornaments? Or is it because of the colors and textures?

Determining this will further help you with decorating, as you will know what to look for and what to focus on when choosing decor pieces.

If the form is what appeals to you the most, you should focus on finding the items from both styles that have this common feature. On the other hand, if the colors and textures are the things that got you, you can – for example – reupholster an antique chair with modern fabrics, thus marrying the two styles beautifully in a single furniture piece.

Choose either a cohesive or a contrasting look

Next, you will need to decide what your end goal is. Do you want to make your pieces live in perfect harmony, or you are more drawn towards a contrasting look? If harmony is your goal, combine furniture pieces that share similar features.

For example, combine your sofa with wooden legs with an antique wooden coffee table to make a visual unity. However, if a contrasting look is more up your alley, consider combining leather lounges with metallic or glass coffee tables to create the perfect juxtaposition of texture and materials.

Warm the area up

Keep in mind that, for example, the modern style tends to appear much colder and less inviting than any other style. If you have chosen it to be your dominant style, you should consider warming up the room a bit to make it more inviting. You can do that by opting for a warm wooden flooring solution or interesting textured lighting fixtures.

Additionally, choosing to “traditionalize” a predominantly modern area with a vintage area rug is also a fun way to merge the two styles. On the other hand, the traditional style can sometimes be a bit too overwhelming, so toning it down a bit with some modern accents is usually the best way to go.

Focus on the function

While the traditional decor and furniture pieces are, without a doubt – very beautiful – they are not always the most practical solutions. That is why you should focus more on choosing the most functional solutions for the pieces that you’ll be using on a regular basis.

For example, an antique chandelier might seem like a great option at first, but unless it can support LED or other energy-efficient light bulbs, choosing it doesn’t make much sense. If you are wondering how to make the cut between the styles and the function, try to go with traditional in the decorative areas of the design and choose modern for the functional sections to make the most out of your room once it’s done.

And there you have it. These were just some of the general rules to follow when it comes to combining different styles in a single area. Overall, you should always focus on function first when furnishing a room and choose to implement the less practical items solely as decor pieces. Once you determine what appeals to you personally the most, you will have no problem finding the right pieces that will help you create a stunning indoor design and make it truly personal.
