Homeowners literally have carte blanche when it comes to design schemes for concrete. One popular and stylish look that is popular with those interested in bold designs is a weathered or distressed look to the concrete. This is achieved by applying a treatment to the concrete that makes it appear aged and textured. Many different and unique looks can be achieved with this process.
Things You’ll Need: Etching solution, safety glasses, latex gloves, safety mask, brush roller, sponge, acrylic concrete stain.
Step 1 — Clean the surface of the concrete of all dirt and grime by mopping or scrubbing with wet rags. Let the concrete dry completely.
Step 2 — Apply an etching solution to the surface of the concrete with a sprayer. Etching solution contains phosphoric acid, which opens the pores in the concrete. Read the warning label to determine what safety precautions should be undertaken. It is likely you will need latex gloves, safety glasses and/or a safety mask.
Step 3 — Agitate the solution by wiping it across the concrete with a brush. It will begin to bubble up. After 15 minutes wash the solution away with a mop or rag dipped in water. Allow the concrete to dry thoroughly.
Step 4 — Apply a layer of acrylic stain over the concrete with your roller. Make sure to roll in the same direction. Allow the stain to dry.
Step 5 — Add another layer but roll in the opposite direction. Allow to dry. Repeat this step until you have achieved the desired distressed look for the concrete. You can even add layers by dabbing the stain with a sponge to create an even more textured look.
The end result of following these steps will be concrete flooring that stands out and has character. And this method is just a jumping off point. Using etching solutions and concrete stains is a great way to create a wide variety of looks. In fact, the only real limit to what can be created is one’s own imagination.
