However, there are times when redecorating just isn’t practical. You might not have the time or money to spend on your house, or you might be renting, in which case you are restricted on what you are allowed to change. However, there are easy ways to give your home a refresh, without redecorating completely.

Feature Wall

A feature wall can add a lot of your personality to a room. If your walls are currently plain, painting just one in a bold colour can look amazing.

Curtains

In many rooms, curtains take up a large portion of a wall. If you don’t want to, or can’t, paint, changing your curtains can be the next best thing. There are so many different styles of curtains available in a large range of patterns and colours, so you could change them whenever you get bored.

Lighting

Lighting is often something that gets neglected, we just put a lampshade up when we move in and forget about it. But light is incredibly important when it comes to the atmosphere of a room. Bright and airy, or dark and romantic? Changing the lighting can also make other features of the room look different.

Floors

If you can’t change your carpets, a large rug can make a huge difference. If your carpet is patterned, go for a plain rug, if it’s plain, try a pattern or a bold color to make a statement. A rug can easily become a focal point of a room.

Pictures

Hang some pictures. Photos or artwork can be a great way of showing your personality as well as adding some interest to a dull wall. Fill your walls with love. Don’t forget the frames either, changing your picture frames can be an inexpensive way of giving the whole room a fresh new feel.

Move Things

Often when we move in, we set our furniture up in a way that works for us, then leave it for years. If you’ve got the space to make changes, do it. Set a new focus point. Does your seating face the TV? Why not move sofas so they face each other, with a small table in the middle? This takes the focus off the TV, and may actually make your family chattier and more likely to read a book.

Cushions and Throws

Add some soft furnishings. A nice throw can change a sofa or chair completely. Some cushions can add some fun or style. Other decorative options such as candles and ornaments can also add a new spark to an old room.

You may find that just a few small changes can change the look and atmosphere of a room massively. Have a look around some shops to find the style you like, then just a few small, cheap items can help you recreate it. Try charity shops and online shops such as eBay to find some great homeware bargains.
