How to Protect Your Home from Tornadoes

How to Protect Your Home from Tornadoes
  • Opening Intro -

When an EF5 tornado is bearing down on your home, to be honest there is not a lot you can do other than take shelter and pray for deliverance.

Fortunately, tornadoes of that level of ferocity are extremely rare, so instead of giving up right now, start looking at ways to protect your home from twisters and other bad weather. You might not be able to keep it 100% safe, but at least you can minimize the damage.

You cannot always prevent this type of damage from occurring, but there are a number of steps homeowners can take to protect their home. Some are more expensive than others are (naturally), but once you have the basics covered (i.e. a good home insurance policy in place), check out the following damage prevention strategies.

Protecting the Garage Door

There are several ways to protect a home from tornado damage, but if you do not have much money to spend, start with reinforcing your garage door. All experts agree that a garage door is the weakest link in any home. The moment the garage door blows open, you may as well kiss goodbye to the rest of your home. High-speed winds will rush in through the opening, creating a pressure cooker effect. It will not take long for the roof to blast off.

Single windowless doors designed to withstand 50+ pounds of pressure per square foot are your best bet if you want to protect your home, but if buying a new garage door is not an option, reinforce your existing one with a vertical bracing system. This will anchor the door and prevent it from being sucked out or blown inwards.

Window Shutters

Placing a protective layer over windows will prevent high-speed debris from blasting through the glass and turning the place into a pressure cooker. Simple sheets of ply are a cheap and effective way of covering windows, but the addition of window clips will add an extra layer of tornado resistance. As long as you have sheets of ply ready to install, it should take no more than 20 minutes to board up a home if tornadoes are looming.

Holding the Roof in Place

Hurricane clips are designed to anchor a roof in an uplift situation, so they will work against tornadoes, since strong tornado winds exert a huge amount of upward pressure against the roof. In addition, once the roof lifts off, the walls tend to collapse outwards.

Galvanized hurricane clips strengthen the tie between the rafters or trusses and roof. The greater the tornado risk, the greater the uplift protection your roof will need, so take advice before buying hurricane clips. The good news is that fixing clips is a DIY task for competent homeowners.

If you do not have the cash to do any of the above, at the very least build a safe room or shelter below ground for your family.

Roof repair Minnesota companies are used to emergency call-outs during tornado season.

They see missing shingles, holes in roofs where flying projectiles have landed, and in the worst cases, a pile of rubble because the roof flew off.
