  • Opening Intro -

Living in a home day-to-day, it is easy to ignore the signs that it may be time for a renovation.

We grow accustomed to our surroundings and overlook damaged walls, narrow doorways, and awkward traffic patterns.

-------------------------------------

Sometimes, however, the need for a renovation is so great that it can no longer be ignored. Here are five situations that require a home renovation.

  • Natural Disasters

Major structural damage due to natural disasters such as fire, earthquakes, or storms is very likely to call for renovations to exteriors. Damaged roofs and walls cannot protect the interior of the house from the elements, leading to deterioration inside.

  • Aging or Disability Adaptations

A home that is eminently livable for a young family may not remain so as the residents grow older or become disabled. Access for wheelchairs or walkers may require widening doorways. Ground floor rooms can be converted to bedrooms if using stairs becomes impossible. The addition of a shower converts a first-floor powder room into a full bath.

  • A structural requirement may be walk-in bath tubs:

  • Termite Damage

Internal structural damage caused by termite infestation may go unnoticed for years since it is often not visible during normal daily living. For instance, a Southern California pest control professional knows that if not discovered promptly, the damage could become worse.  The damage might be so severe that the home requires renovation rather than just repairing structurally-unsound framing, beams, and foundations. Eventually, termite damage can lead to cracked plumbing which will cause water damage, sagging walls, and doors and windows that do not close properly.

  • Buying an Older Home

Older homes that need some TLC are often priced below market and offer a great opportunity for the right buyer. Homes that are more than a few years old may need much more than cosmetic fixes such as new paint, flooring and window treatments, and the floor plans of older homes may not meet the needs of today’s families. A major renovation can turn a neglected diamond in the rough into a charming, personalized and character-filled home.

  • Blending Families

Two people who each have children from prior relationships may find that a home renovation can actually smooth the transition. The renovated house sheds its identity as the property of the original owner and becomes a new home, ‘our’ home, not ‘yours’ or ‘mine’. Children can contribute suggestions for the renovation, becoming invested in the process of making the house a home for the entire new family.

Whatever the reason, seek the assistance of licensed designers, contractors and inspectors. A professionally done renovation will ensure a safe, secure and livable home for years to come.
