What Makes the Perfect Den?

A well-designed den can work as a home office, family room, spare bedroom, library or – ideally – a combination of all the above.

The unifying idea for a good den is simple: privacy!

If you’re lucky enough to have one room in your home that can be closed off from the chaos and interruptions of daily life, you can easily create a space to relax and unwind, whether alone or with family and friends. This is especially important considering today’s trend toward more open floor plans.

It’s great to be able to prepare a meal in the kitchen while talking with guests in the living room, but what happens when you want to relax in front of the TV and your spouse is running the dishwasher? Or what if you’re trying to catch up on your reading while the kids are sitting at the kitchen island fighting over snacks?

Oh yes, the den!

When the open floor plan fails, retiring to this one space devoted to privacy and relaxation is exactly what’s in order.

Creating the Perfect Den

In designing the den, it’s important to follow one simple rule: create a space YOU will enjoy. Since the den is that one place where you get to relax, don’t stress over whether the carpet matches the curtains, or the wall to wall carpet is out of date. If you like it, it’s perfect!

That said, there are a few things to consider in planning the layout of your den, to make the most of your private little get-away.

Begin by deciding on a primary purpose for the room.

1. Home Office Den

If you’re in need of a home office, for example, plan the space around a desk or computer station large enough to suit your needs. Focus on installing good lighting for your work space, room enough for equipment such as phone, fax and printer, and a comfortable office chair where you’ll have no excuse but to settle in and get things done.

If you know you’re easily prone to distraction, keep music and television out, and invest in curtains or blinds to shut off the outside world when necessary.

2. Family Entertainment Den

If a family room is what you’re after, the television may instead be the center of attention, housed in an entertainment center that allows everyone to enjoy music, DVDs or other media. Adequate electrical outlets are key to conveniently setting up either of these spaces.

So if you’re designing the room from the ground up, be sure to consider this, along with wiring for a landline phone or fax if needed, and perhaps a built in charging station for cell phones, tablets, and other devices.

3. Multi Purpose Den

Choosing furniture that converts for multiple uses is key in creating a room that serves more than one purpose.

A comfy sectional sofa is perfect for curling up alone with a good book. But if one or more sections convert into recliners, you have an instant spare room, ideal for a child’s sleepover or a weekend guest.

To help you and your family relax, consider shelves or bookcases to display personal photos or mementos, little reminders of relaxing vacations, perhaps, or symbols of family milestones. Such touches make the space more personal and inviting.

Remember, privacy is the overall goal for the room. No matter who wants to relax or why, the home den should be the place to do it. Make it comfortable, make it yours, and you’ll make it work!
