Homeowners should consider a DIY closet system because it is a cost effective way of getting enough space for storage purposes.

Tools Needed

Some of the tools needed for this project are an electronic stud finder, a tape measure, a level, a power drill and a hacksaw. The first thing to do is clear everything out of the closet. Remove any hanging bars and old shelves that have no use. At this point the closet is fully prepared for a new shelving system.

Use putty to fill all holes and let it dry completely. Use a fine-grit sandpaper to sand off the excess spackle. It is now time to vacuum the whole closet to remove any remaining dust. Paint the walls of the closet.

Wire Shelving Systems

Installing wire systems in closets is becoming popular as they are sturdy, easy to install and are easy to invest in. There are various types of wire shelving accessories that can help to personalize one’s storage space. They can be in form of heavy-gauge steel shelves coated with vinyl. Drawers, shoe racks, sliding tie racks and laundry bins are very easy to install. Wire systems can stand up to heavy objects and can resist expansion and contraction. Besides, they do not sag or wrap.

There are two simple types of wire shelving systems. The versatile track mounted organizing system and the wire shelf that attaches to the clips. For the first system, vertical bars are attached to the track. The brackets are fastened to the correct standards for support. The wire shelves rest upon the brackets. The latter system has clips or hooks that screw to the wall and the wire shelf is attached to the clips or hooks. A diagonal metal support is attached to each shelf end to provide increased support.

Draw level lines at the points where the shelves are to hang throughout the closet. Using a stud finder, mark each side of every stud that touches the lines. By the use of a hacksaw, cut the hanging track to the correct lengths. It’s time to attach hanging tracks or clips by drilling screws along the lines into every stud.

It’s a good idea to cut and install the longest shelves to ensure there is enough length. If there are usable pieces left, it is good to install short shelves for smaller items. Attach the brackets that are meant for the system.

These shelves are great for hanging clothes. They are compatible with the different type of hangers.
