Five Tips to Gain More Natural Light In Your Home

Five Tips to Gain More Natural Light In Your Home
  • Opening Intro -

Opening windows, flipping blinds around and spreading curtains are obvious ways to get more natural light in a room.

But when winter months come around in cold-weather climates or on rainy days, gaining natural light may become a bit of a chore.

Invest In a Sun Roof

Even on a dim or rainy day, the smell of rain and hearing rain drops are incorporated into meditation CDs for a reason. Enjoy the sight from the warmth and dry atmosphere in your own home. While sun roofs are still more popular in cars, eco-friendly homeowners are becoming more enthused about the idea, especially when sliding a panel to open the roof can save dollars off of their electricity bill. It also doubles as a fun camping-in moment for those who want to enjoy night light from stars.

Try Feng Shui

There are five elements in feng shui: fire, earth, metal, water and wood. And each element has colors associated with it. Earth element colors (light yellow, beige, sandy) are strongly recommended to lighten a room with accent pieces or painting the walls.

Rearrange The Furniture

The bookshelf positioned right next to the window may be blocking sunlight inside of the room. Walk into each room and see how changing the position of furniture could possibly help add more light. For furniture, such as a table, that are too big to rearrange, evaluate how often they’re used. It may be yard sale time. Or, reconsider how the rooms are arranged altogether. Maybe the living room should be the bedroom. If the issue of getting natural light is just for one particular room that gets more visits than others, rearranging furniture could solve it all.

Invest in Light-Colored Furniture

The thought of buying a white couch may be cringeworthy for parents. Just imagine the damage that children will do. However, the type of material for the couch can make all the difference. Cleaning a faux leather couch may not be as big of a task as real leather, and the latter material is easier to clean pet hair off of. Or, consider light couches with acrylic or microfiber material, both of which are easy to clean. Even those without children will appreciate more durable couch material for accidental spills and pizza TV nights.

Evaluate The Floor Material

Dark-colored carpet may be easier to hide stains, but it doesn’t do much to lighten a room. However, if beige, white or other light colors are chosen for new carpet, make an immediate shoes-off rule to keep it clean for as long as possible. Even offer free footies and extra slippers for those who are shy about showing their feet.

Whether spending extra money for furniture or carpet does the trick or reworking the furniture arrangement, homeowners don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to invest in natural light. But even if you do, the environmental bonuses, electricity perks and fun memories are well worth the investment
