Ceiling Lights: Choosing Between Pendant, Chandelier and Flush Fixtures

Ceiling Lights: Choosing Between Pendant, Chandelier and Flush Fixtures
  • Opening Intro -

When you are giving your room a makeover you want to make sure that you choose the right ceiling light to get the desired amount of lighting as well as complimenting your decor and showing it off in the best light possible.

Here is a look at the different range of ceiling lights that you can choose from.

Pendant Lighting

You can use pendant lighting to achieve a number of different lighting effects depending on where in the house you are looking to place them. In order to choose the right type of pendant lighting you need to decide if you are looking for task lighting or trying to create a setting with a greater level of atmosphere over functionality. You can get single point or multi-point pendant fittings which will give you a run of lighting for wider coverage or even use a track, particularly in an area where you looking for good light coverage, such as a kitchen worktop or preparation area. Adjustable pendant lighting which you might choose to hang over a dining table gives you the choice of raising or lowering the light fitting according to your requirements and the setting you are creating.

Chandelier Lighting

This type of light fitting is mainly used in the dining area but their design features and their versatility have changed over the years. Many homes now have informal and formal dining areas rather than just one particular chosen venue and you can use a chandelier fitting to meet the needs of a modern home whether you are entertaining or enjoying a relaxed family meal. Chandeliers come in all shapes and sizes these days and whilst you can still get the jaw dropping centrepiece that consists of 1,000’s of pieces of lead crystal, many modern homes are simply not the right setting for such formality. Chandeliers still create a focal point in your room and with the styles and designs that are available from ultra-modern to decidedly quirky, you can still make a statement if you want to.

Flush Fixtures

Flush mount or semi-flush mount lights are the most common fitting that you will find in many homes. The reason that they are so popular is that they are versatile and require very little space so you can have a light fitting in a small or confined space that is not obtrusive but you can still make a choice based more on design than basic functionality. A flush mount ceiling light is the ideal choice in a fairly new home where the ceiling height is likely to be quite low but if you have a ceiling height that is between 9 or 10ft then you can use a semi-flush mount light which will give the right clearance for your chosen fitting. You will probably find that a flush light fixture will work best when used in confined areas or small rooms like a hallway or a bathroom .
Your design options are almost limitless and you can choose from a range of formal through to modern and anywhere in between according to your taste and the decor that you have.

Getting the Right Bulb

Once that you have decided on the type of fitting that you want you need to make the right choice of bulb to get the most out of your fixture. Low wattage bulbs and energy saving bulbs work best especially when the fitting is enclosed which could allow a normal bulb to overheat, so if you require a powerful light then consider using a more expensive but ultimately longer lasting bulb such as a LED light.

Choose the right fixture for the setting and you are well on the way to helping your design ideas work in just the way that you want them to.
