5 Signs it’s Time to Replace Your Windows

5 Signs it’s Time to Replace Your Windows
  • Opening Intro -

If you wait too long to replace old windows, you could end up spending more time and money on additional problems that developed as a result.

Pay attention to the following warning signs to know when you need to call a window company:

1. Bad Insulation

When the windows in your home are closed, they shouldn’t let anything inside except light. If your windows let cold air into your home during the winter, they are contributing to a high heat bill. The same thing happens during the hot months when you are running your air conditioner. When you replace windows that have bad insulation, your home will stay at a level temperature, and your utility bills will go down.

Here are some sure signs that your windows aren’t insulating your rooms:

  • Condensation builds up on the glass
  • The glass is hot to the touch during summer months
  • The glass is cold to the touch during winter months
  • You can feel the outside air coming in

You shouldn’t be able to determine the outside temperature by standing near or touching the glass in your bedroom window!

2. Cracked Glass

Small cracks in a window may not seem like a big deal, especially if they aren’t noticeable. However even if the cracks are thin, they are still letting air penetrate the surface and enter your home.

If the cracks are noticeable, they can decrease your home’s curb appeal. If the neighborhood kids start referring to your home as the “haunted house” of the street, you may want to replace those cracked windows.

3. Cracked Panes

Cracked panes not only contribute to insulation problems, but they can also serve as an entry-point for insects. If insects find the cracks before you get around to fixing them, you could find yourself looking for a good window company and a good exterminator.

Cracks of any kind—in glass or panes—also let water inside your home. Even the smallest trickle of water can wreak all kinds of havoc on a home. Don’t wait to replace your cracked window panes or else you may find yourself with water damage to take care of.

4. Won’t Open or Shut

Window problems are not limited to cracks and poor insulation. Even if you have windows manufactured by popular companies like Gentek or Northstar, windows are more than the materials they are made out of. Many of them also have an aspect of utility—they open and close.

If your windows are having a hard time opening, they get stuck in their track, or they will not shut, there may be a problem with the frame or the windowsill. Keeping your window track clean will help increase the life of your frames, but eventually you may need to think about getting new windows.

5. Noise

Glass certainly doesn’t block noise as well as wood, brick, plaster, and whatever else the walls of your home are made of. However the glass should keep the outside world outside, and your inside life inside. If you can hear your family member’s conversations when you are walking up to your front door, the windows may be a little thin.

If you live in a noisy area, specifically purchasing windows with laminated glass can help reduce the extra outside noise pollution.

Benefits of Window Replacement

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get tax reductions for replacing old windows with energy-efficient ones. Another great benefit of window replacement is that new windows increase the value of your home. If lower utility bills, better insulation, and increased curb appeal sound good to you, start getting quotes from window companies right away!
