We’ve listed some of our favourites for you to take a look at, each providing a great variety of functions and some brilliant inspiration.

1.       Smartdraw

Smartdraw is a suite of programs containing tools for both design and project management. With it, you can create presentations, flow-charts and timelines, as well as floor plans and individual room plans. This is a great program for organising and planning projects right from the start, and its usability means you can create basic or very detailed plans, making it a good choice for both individuals and businesses. It has an almost infinite selection of furniture, building materials and pre-made plans, and with a free trial it’s ideal for testing the water if you’re looking for a professional suite.

2.       My Deco 3D Planner

My Deco 3D Planner is an excellent in-browser room planner which allows you to upload existing floor plans or create your own from scratch. It’s completely free, and you can even share your creations on Facebook if you want to get some tips and advice from friends! You can add windows, doors and even architectural features such as a fireplace to your room shape, then add furniture, flooring and wall décor. The program has a great camera that you can move throughout your design process, allowing you to see a 3D image of your creation, and it will even show you where to buy the products featured!

3.       Homestyler

Homestyler is a similar in-browser app that allows you to create floor plans with a massive range of options for doors, windows, furniture and appliances. It’s made by Autodesk, the same team responsible for professional programs such as 3ds Studio Max and AutoCAD. Designed with homeowners in mine, Homestyler is a great way to plan your interior design scheme from the ground up. A major highlight of this program is the ability to snap quickly from 2D to 3D, so you can follow your progress as you go; it’s also easy to use even if you have no prior knowledge of interior design, making it a great option for beginners and professional alike.

4.       Topps Tiles Tile Visualiser

The Tile Visualiser offers a great way of seeing how the different tiles on the Topps Tiles website would look in different rooms of the house. It’s a great way of quickly flicking through the catalogue and gleaning some inspiration for your own room, and you can purchase the tiles directly from the webpage. The app offers a selection of rooms to choose from, allowing you to pick one most similar to your own, then provides photo-quality representations of each room for you to mix and match tiling schemes. Including both wall and floor tiles, it’s ideal for planning a bathroom or kitchen, and you can save the ones you’re most fond of for future reference.

5.       IKEA Home Planner

IKEA’s free software allows you to plan your furniture from what’s available in its catalogue, allowing you to tot up your total spend as you go along. If you’ve ever seen an IKEA bookshelf or bed and wondered how it would look, this is a great opportunity to find out without having to purchase and build it, and will give you a great idea of what to get if you’re planning on buying all of your furnishings in one place. The program is so integrated with your shopping experience that, once built, it even allows you to print of the list of items to take into the store with you, ensuring you don’t forget the little details!
