Relaxing BBQs with friends don’t have to be ruined by a shower or three. Elegant garden get-togethers with the family shouldn’t be spoiled by unexpected blazing sun. Although the summer can be extremely changeable, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your garden in style, whatever the weather throws at you. As a champion of outdoor living, I’m determined that it can be achieved throughout the whole year.
We live in such stunning surroundings that outside space shouldn’t be ignored but celebrated in style. There are many little interior tricks, which will make your gardens feel like they are an extension of your house. Here are some summer-time solutions that will create the perfect outside retreat from advancing rain clouds or suffocating heat, without compromising on style or substance.
There is nothing better than breakfast outside on warm mornings. For me and my pale skin, that means sitting in dappled shade rather than direct rays. Although whichever you prefer, making a space that is irresistible means your garden will become like an extra interior space – one that is your favourite place to be.
I don’t think you can beat white as the signature tone outside for a classic clean look that enhances the natural light but also keeps cool in the heat. Taking a striking color from the interior design and carrying it through to your exterior, with a delicate touch, will make it feel like you’ve extended your house right into the garden.
Having an appropriate dining set that mirrors the quality of your interior is a must have for al fresco entertaining, whether it’s lunch-time martinis in the sun or elegant dinner parties in the shade.
Stylish Garden Getaway
Sometimes you just want to get away from it all and that can still be done in style, without leaving your own home. A stunning gazebo with comfy seating is the perfect way to listen to your garden in peace, or channel the Middle East with the draped white fabric and matching sofas for the inside, outside.
Centering your furniture around a chiminea or contemporary log fire will mean you can enjoy relaxed dining well into the long summer evenings, even if there’s a nip in the air.
The Best Of Both Worlds
If the weather threatens to spoil plans you might want something more solid that can be used throughout the seasons. Watching the change of the colors, as autumn drips its colors into my garden makes the disappearance of summer easier to bear. A contemporary garden room is a compromise between the natural light of large windows and sturdier insulated walls, meaning it keeps cool in the summer and cozy in the winter.
Elegantly designed, it can work as anything you want; a place to watch the rain with a good book, or a retreat from the mid-day sun with a glass of something cool.
Wake Up To It
Why wait until you get to a window to see what the weather is doing? Having a bedroom that looks out over a stunning view is an interior-meets-exterior dream come true. Add in bi-fold doors or large floor to ceiling windows, which open the whole front of the room and you can let the breeze wake you up. If you can convince someone else to get the coffee started it’ll be perfection.
It’s possible to enjoy the outside, whatever the weather. Turning your garden into a stunning retreat means it’ll be a place you’ll want to use for entertaining and relaxing, not just for the summer but for all the seasons.
