You Can Save Money on Patio Furniture

You Can Save Money on Patio Furniture
  • Opening Intro -

If you're in the market for patio furniture, you may have noticed the steep price tags on some of the higher-end pieces out there.

You've seen those ads for a single Alfresco natural dining chair for $219 and quickly did the path to learn that a full set of chairs, table, umbrella and pillows would set you back by more than $3,000.

Save money on your favorite summer furniture.

That’s an amount you can’t afford or at least fear would bust your budget if you charged it. Fortunately, you can find good quality patio furniture for a reasonable price if you employ the following shopper savvy methods as you look for a new set.

Wait, then buy.

Well before the last snowstorm of the season pounds your area, outdoors speciality shops put away the snow gear and bring out the summer furniture. That’s the wrong time to buy and not only for seasonal reasons — prices for new style furniture are at peak levels and stay there for several months. If you can wait until early July, that same set will be sold at discounts from 30 to 50 percent off.

Buy last year’s styles.

Patio furniture styles are trendy and frequently change. The designer favorite from last year is out and this year’s trends are hot. Last year’s furniture can still be had, but not from your outdoors emporium. Discount stores such as various “big” and “odd” lots acquire the unsold inventory and will sell these finds at deep discounts. Half-off is just a starting price on the trendiest patio furniture with some savings in the 70 percent range. Inspect furniture pieces carefully to avoid broken or marred pieces.

Lay it away.

If a furniture pattern catches your eye, you may be able to buy what you want on layaway. With this arrangement, the store holds the furniture you want and keeps it for you until it is paid off. That 6-piece bistro set you saw in March can be paid off in June if you make weekly payments. Moreover, the retailer may give you a discount if the price drops later on. Stores such as KMart and Sears are still big on layaways.

Buy used, make it new.

Clearly, buying new is the preference for many homeowners that are looking for clean, attractive patio furniture. But, gently used furniture can have its advantage if the condition is very good and the style is what you like. Keep your eyes peeled for a yard sale at one of the more upscale communities in your area. The homeowner may have tired of her set after a few years, deciding to replace hers with the latest style. Negotiate your best offer for the furniture and borrow a friend’s pickup truck to take it home. If the pillows and umbrella style are not to your liking, you can replace these with new designs from your outdoors store.

One piece at a time.

You may have your eye on a lavish 7-piece teak patio set with an extended table and folding chairs, but your budget says “hold off” for now. What you could do is buy pieces that you can afford now and add more pieces later. For example, purchase the table with four chairs and buy the remaining two chairs later on. Also, if the table extends, you can add even more chairs, an umbrella and a side table when your finances permit this.

The warm weather has you thinking “outdoor living” which is only natural — you want to be outside. You can avoid the pricey credit card charge and use your savings to buy a grille, seasonal table settings and more.
