a) Installing a deadbolt
Notes:
- It would be nice if we could live in Mayberry where we didn’t have to lock our doors. Where everyone respected each other’s property and possessions. But unfortunately for many, we don’t. Most of us live in communities where intruders take advantage of violating our home and possessions.
- So securing your home from intruders – what does that mean? It means a number of measures that we can take to protect our perimeter. Ideas that can ensure the safety of your home and family.
- The first such security measure is installing deadbolts on all of your entry doors. The advantage of deadbolts (along with other measures listed below) is that it becomes an obstacle that slows down a break-in. Just enough time for your other security measures to kick in.

b) Electronic entrance with safety latch
Notes:
- You have a combination of regular and keyless entry locks that keep out intruders but allow family and friends to enter easily. Keyless entry locks vary from keypad, finger print recognition and wifi connected entry.
- The advantage of keyless is that you can change the access code for example, for your house cleaner or service contractor that needs access while you are away. Your children can likewise have their own code that can be changed in the event that they share the code with those to whom they shouldn’t.
- How about a door latch? Again, something that will not stop an intruder but only delay their entry. It’s the delay that most intruders are concern with – especially if you have a home security systems noted below.

c) Window locks
Notes:
- You might be able to secure your entry doors, but intruders can easily move over to other weak entry points such as windows and glass sliding doors. So again, how secure are your windows?
- Newly installed windows come with locks – but you can also buy additional locks to doubly secure those windows on the ground level. Again, locks do not keep intruders out – they only delay them. Intruders can easily break a window to unlatch a lock.
- But breaking the window and removing the glass to avoid getting cut delays their entry – just enough time for your home security system to kick in – our next topic.

d) Installing home security system
Notes:
- We spoke about installing measures that delays the intruder – such as door and window locks. The delay is just enough time for your home security system to notify you via cell or other mobile device so that you can take action.
- Your home security system will have sensors – cameras – alarms – and connections to your cellular device and local police if any of these systems detect intrusion. So if anyone is trying to pick your deadbolt, pry open a window, etc., your motion detection will notify you immediately.
- Again that delay gives you just enough time to take action before much damage can be done.

e) Keeping valuables locked up
Notes:
- Intruders are very smart – they stake out homes that can be easily entered – move to home entry points hidden from neighborhood watchers – cut phone lines to home security systems – and come with tools to easily enter doors or windows. But they also know that they about 10 minutes top before the police arrive if a backup wireless system is in place.
- So secure your precious valuables in an attached safe – valuables that can’t be replaced if stolen – plus other papers that need be protected. Make sure the safe is securely attached to the wall or floor or hidden so that the intruder can’t walk out with it.
