Decisions, decisions
Notes:
- Before simply slapping some tiles up on your wall, you’ll need to create a game plan if you want your project to turn out well. In other words, decide what type of tiles you want to use, the color and type of grout to spread between them, and the pattern you want to arrange the tiles in.
- Subway tiles generally come in either glass or ceramic in a wide range of colors to suit many different design styles. If you want your tiles to reflect light and create a brighter, larger-looking space, glass subway tiles are ideal. However, if you like the look of a more opaque tile, ceramic is the way to go.
- As for the choice of grout color and tile pattern, such decisions will largely depend on your personal preference. Just keep in mind that more complex tile arrangements may require more time and leave more room for error.

Work from the ground up
Notes:
- Another tip on installing subway tiles yourself is to start from the bottom and work your way up. Because the lower tiles will serve as a sort of baseboard and support the ones above, starting at the lowest point is essential.
- Without such support, the weight of the tiles higher up on the wall will cause them to slowly shift and slide down to create a wonky, uneven appearance. Further, it’s especially important to ensure that your first line of tiles is level because the weight of the above tiles will rest on it.

Don’t skimp on spacers
Notes:
- Just because you’re installing your subway tile yourself doesn’t mean you want the result to look like a DIY project. As such, it’s best to use tile spacers.
- Tile spacers are small plastic pieces that you can place between tiles during the installation process. These simple but invaluable tools allow you to install tiles an equal distance from each other and line them up properly.
- They are extremely inexpensive and easy to use, yet many people don’t take the time to implement them—often resulting in unevenly spaced tiles. For optimum results, use spacers on each end of the tile, and leave them in for 20 to 30 minutes until the tile’s adhesive sets but before they bond to it.
