8 Best Climbing Flowers and Vines to Add to Your Garden

Enjoy the following pic ideas. Don't forget to leave us a quick comment below.

And please share this post within your social networks.

  • Growing beautiful climbing plants seems to be intimidating to many gardeners. We are all used to planting regular close-to-the-ground plants that are easily managed, but a vine seems like it might be very difficult.

Vines are different, but not more difficult. Don't miss the opportunity to add a fabulous feature plant to your garden. Besides their stunning beauty, climbing flowers and vines can be used to provide privacy, hide an unpleasant view or cover a bare wall.

All About Vines

Notes:

  • How Vines Attach:

Vines attach themselves to the supporting structure in several different ways, depending on the specific plant. Twining vines will twist themselves around the supporting structure as they grow upward. Other vines grow tendrils, which are specialized shoots that reach out from the stem of the plant. The tendril will twist around the support structure holding the vine in place.

  • Another way vines hold on is with specialized aerial roots that attach to the structure. These roots can cause damage over the years and require a little more maintenance. Finally, there are some vines that have no ability to hold on to the support.
  • Climbing roses fall into this category. They will have to be attached to the support by the gardener. This is usually a once-a-year task and certainly worth the time in order to have a wall of roses.
  • Perennial or Annual:

Vines, just like other plants, can be annuals or perennials. If you are a novice to growing vining plants, you might want to start with an annual. If you don’t like the location or it didn’t work out the way you thought it would, you can try a different spot next year.

  • If you are ready to plant a perennial vine or climbing rose, be sure to check your growing zone and the amount of sunlight your site has. Both are critical to your success.
  • Add Support Structure:

Always have the support structure in place before you plant. That way, you won’t have to disturb the plant roots after the climbing roses or climbing flower vines are planted. Amend the soil with compost to give your plant the best start possible.

Climbing Roses

Notes:

  • It is hard to beat the stunning beauty of a climbing rose in full bloom. Then, add the heady fragrance and there is no competition. Climbing roses are available in colors from white to pink to red. There are also sunny yellows and vibrant oranges.
  • Choose a classic rose like Zephirine Drouhin or a newer rose like the blushing white of Honeymoon Arborose. Whichever you choose, you will enjoy your climbing rose for many years to come.
  • Some climbing rose varieties to choose from:

Clematis

Notes:

  • Many Types:

We’ve all seen the beautiful purple clematis covering a trellis in someone’s yard. But are you aware that there are about 300 species of clematis today? There are all different colors and shapes to the flowers, and all are worth having. That is the biggest problem–narrowing it down to one.

  • Growing Clematis:

Clematis is a perennial that likes its head in the sun, but its feet in the shade. In other words, plant some perennials around the base of the clematis to shade it and to help keep the moisture level steady, but the rest of the vine loves full sun.

  • While clematis is a great vining flower on its own, some gardeners like to grow it with their climbing rose. The clematis flowers can take over the show when the rose has finished its major bloom.
  • Some clematis colors to view:

Sweet Autumn Clematis

Notes:

  • This clematis deserves its own listing because it is so different from the regular clematis. As the name indicates, this clematis doesn’t start blooming until late summer and through the fall.
  • Just as the rest of the garden is winding down, this clematis puts on a spectacular show of small, one-inch white flowers that absolutely cover this flowering vine. Plant the same as other clematis and wait for people to stop and ask what that plant is and where they can get one.

Wisteria

Notes:

  • Wisteria is a perennial flowering vine that is hardy as far north as Zone 3. The large flower heads are beautiful shades of lavender to violet. They start blooming in mid to late spring and look gorgeous growing along fences or on a trellis or arbor.
  • Do you have a color of wisteria is mind:

Climbing Hydrangea

Notes:

  • If you thought you couldn’t grow a climbing flower because you don’t have enough sun, this is the plant for you. Much like the bush variety of hydrangea, this plant can tolerate part sun or even shade.
  • This plant is a little slow to get started, but if you can be patient for a couple of years, it will reward you with a vine that is covered with the large hydrangea flowerheads. Leave the flowerheads on the vine and they will dry to provide winter interest or cut them and use in dried flower arrangements indoors.

Morning Glory

Notes:

  • This is an annual, but it will self-seed if you allow it to. There isn’t an easier vining flower to grow. All it needs is support and this vine will twist its way to the top, covered with flowers.
  • The traditional color of morning glories is sky blue; however, there are other colors available, including a brilliant deep purple, Morning glories got their name because of their habit of closing the flowerhead during the heat of the afternoon.

Hyacinth Vine

Notes:

  • This is also an annual that is well worth growing. It is beautiful from top to bottom. The entire vine is covered in leaves with a purple undertone. The flowers grow along the length of long stems that stand out from the plant to make them more visible.
  • The flowers look similar to the flowers on peas, but they are a brilliant fuchsia color. The flowers then are replaced with long flat seed pods that are a shiny purple.
