Here are signs that your old pipes need to be replaced, and it’s time to call a professional.
1. Constant Clogging
You may start to notice that your water is not flowing as fast as it should or that your sinks or bathtubs are not draining. This could mean that your pipes have rusted and the rust has begun to break away and lodge itself somewhere in your plumbing system. A plumber can assist in helping restore the water pressure to your plumbing along with draining any clogged drains.
2. Strong Odor
There may be a strange smell wafting up from your drains. Pieces of broken pipe may be preventing proper flow. If any food or hair has gone down the drain, it can’t make it’s way through the pipes and will build and cause a bad smell. Plumbers can work with the pipes to help remove an odor or blockage that may be causing the bad smell.
3. Low Water Pressure
Years ago, all water was hard, which caused mineral build up in pipes. Over time, this build up would decrease the speed and amount of water that flowed through the plumbing.
4. Leakage
Older pipes, such as those made from cast iron, have issues with build up around the joints (where two pipes meet and are fused together). Water then sits in front of the joint. Eventually, the pipe rusts and begins to leak. Plumbers can often times seal any leaky pipes depending on the extent of the damage or cracks in the pipes. With that said, the plumber will also have the necessary tools and abilities to replace the old and damaged pipes.
5. Noticeable Rust
On the older pipes, mostly made from cast iron, will show signs of rusting. This may show up on or near joints first. This will be an early sign for plumbers that the pipes may need to be replaces. When pipes become old and rusted, they are more likely to leak or break.
6. Flaking paint
Many older pipes were painted. If the pipes are just starting to rust on the outside, it will make the paint crack and flake off. This can turn the running water into your home a mess and possibly become a health hazard for those that may be living or visiting in your home.
7. Higher Water Bill
Do you notice that you’ve had a significant increase in your charges for water, but you haven’t been using any more water that normal? If you live in an older home, and this happens, you may have a leak in the old plumbing. Many times this is the first indication of an issue.
