The Packaging
A lot of products arrived at your home for the renovation project. They came in packaging ranging from cardboard to plastic, and other recyclable materials in between. Not everyone thinks about what to do with the packages after they tear them open.
Some people just dispose of packaging materials in the trash, but setting them aside for recycling is always the better option. Even if you’ve completely destroyed the box, there is still use for it. Keep a separate pile for the leftover packages and dispose of them properly.
Roofing Materials
Removing old roof installations generates a lot of waste, especially if it’s a big roofing project. Some of those items like the sheathing are not salvageable. There’s no reusing them, but other materials like asphalt shingles can be upcycled.
Developers can use these shingles for pavement because they have a shelf life of about 20 years. Check with your roofer and see if they have recommendations for how you can properly dispose of these materials. If your roof has slate, you can use that stone in other areas of your home like the kitchen or bathroom.
Unused Lumber
We all know leftover wood will make for some good projects, and that there’s always a good use for it. Depending on your location, there might be specific rules about disposing of your lumber. You may not be able to recycle treated wood because of the chemicals, and treated wood has its own recycling guidelines.
You can sell unused lumber back to the supplier or use it for another project in the future. You never know what other areas in your home you might want to adjust or tear down to rebuild. If you’re looking to build a treehouse or shed, you’ve got the lumber for it.
Donate Items
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you’ve decided to renovate your home and go for a more modern look, you’ll want to change a lot of things. Most homeowners start with the bathroom and kitchen for these projects.
Certain appliances you have in your home might be in high demand right now. For instance, a clawfoot bathtub is a rare find, and a lot of renovators go crazy for items like that. Consider donating some of your appliances to a charity that can find better use for them.
