Preparing Storage Spaces and Yard for the Transition From Cold to Warm Weather

Preparing Storage Spaces and Yard for the Transition From Cold to Warm Weather
  • Opening Intro -

We are all excited to be approaching the glorious days of summer, but before you have fun in the sun, you likely have some adjustments to make to your home.

-------------------------------------

These changes might involve switching out your cold-weather clothes for summertime garments, uncovering the pool and bringing the outdoor plants back to life, or taking the patio furniture out of storage for those epic backyard parties.

Every home has its own routine, and we are here to help with some great tips on how to quickly transition your house today and make the most out of the upcoming summer season.

Modify Your Indoor Storage

Once the weather officially changes and you no longer need your winter coats, boots, and mittens, you should think about storing them all away until the cold season returns. Winter clothes are often bulky and can take up a lot of space if you simply hang them in the hall or stuff them in a corner. Instead, take maximum advantage of your storage space. If you have a closet that you don’t use frequently, then put them there.

Before you store your winter clothes, check for any stains or odors and clean them if necessary. Otherwise, those stains will set in and likely become permanent.

When considering a storage space, ensure that it’s a cool and dry place where the clothes won’t get damaged. Many people choose to put the larger items into vacuum-sealed bags which will ensure ultimate protection and will shrink them down, so they take up even less space.

If your kids are growing and likely won’t fit into the winter clothes next season, then consider getting them out of the house and donating those clothes to charity. Not only will they find a good home, but you’ll also free up some space.

When it comes to those large, bulky winter boots, you can try some unique shoe storage ideas to keep them out of the way. For instance, you could put the boots back in the boxes you bought them in and slip them under the bed or get a shoe organizer that hangs on the back of a door, so they are out of sight.

You can also store shoes inside of an ottoman, so they don’t take up any extra space at all.

Bring the Backyard to Life

With everything stored away, it’s now time to turn your attention to the backyard. Start by watering the plants and the grass to ensure that they are bright and vibrant by the time you start inviting guests over.

You might also consider planting new flowers in spaces that could use a little more color. If your grass isn’t bouncing back as it should, then give it a round of fertilizer and plant new sod or artificial turf if necessary.

      some outdoor entertaining to consider

Depending on where you live, snow and winter storms may have left marks and dirt on the outside of your house. If so, clean that up and improve your curb appeal by power washing the exterior of your home. You can also clean the windows and replace any siding or roof tiles that may have fallen off since last summer.

If you have a pool, then this is also the time to start opening it up for the season. You’ll want to take your time with this process, starting by removing the pool cover, cleaning it, and storing it appropriately.

Then, fill the pool and remove any debris that gets in during the process. Next, check and repair the pool filter if necessary.

Finally, make sure to shock your pool by using chlorine to thoroughly disinfect the water, so you know it’s safe to swim in. Then, put on your swimsuit, jump in, and enjoy your handiwork.

Prepare For Entertaining

Now that your backyard is green and vibrant, you should start thinking about the additions and updates that you can make to entertain your guests. Start with the perfect patio. Before anything else, make sure you have enough seating for all of your guests.

You can do that by either pulling the chairs and table out from storage or by building your seating right into the patio. You can look online for ideas. From there, it typically only takes some wood and a bit of imagination to create the perfect seating area.

Also, think about the other additions that you can make to create the ultimate entertaining space. An outdoor kitchen will allow you to host barbecues and cook hotdogs out on the deck.

Another idea is to add a hot tub so you and your friends can sit back and relax while the water and steam do their thing. Don’t forget to add exterior lighting so everyone can see each other during the festivities.

If any of these projects require extensive work, remember to be safe during your construction project by staying hydrated when you work outside and wearing sunglasses to block the sun.

When it comes to hosting outdoor parties this summer, make sure to be smart about your plans and do your research. Make it a point to check the weather ahead of time. If it will be too cold then consider putting out space heaters or making a fire pit.

Whether you make food on the grill or prepare it inside first, cover it once you’re finished to avoid bugs and grass. Finally, set up your lighting ahead of time to ensure that there is enough illumination to create the perfect mood and allow everyone to get around safely.

As you can see, there are many changes and transitions that you can make to prepare your home for the bright summer months. Consider these tips and make your house the go-to relaxation destination this season.
