Autumnal Upkeep: Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Autumnal Upkeep: Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
  • Opening Intro -

As summer turns to fall and the kids head back to school, it’s time to start preparing your home for the coziest season of all.

Ensure your house is a haven of comfort and warmth this season with our fall home maintenance checklist.

Give Your Roof a Once-Over

As the leaves begin to fall, it’s a good idea to clean out your gutters and check for any damages your roof may have sustained over the summer.

In many parts of the United States, fall can be a particularly windy and wet season. Checking for common causes of roof damage will reduce the risk of more extensive issues arising come winter.

As you assess your home for any signs of damage, be sure to inspect and clean out your gutters. Clogged or faulty gutters can cause a buildup of stagnant water on your roof, which can lead to significant damage if not properly tended to.

Check All Heat Sources

Fall is the perfect time to hunker down in the warmth and comfort of your house. Ensure that your home is as cozy as possible by making sure all your heat sources are in proper working order. Clean out your chimney of any debris to achieve the perfect fall fireplace.

Bleed hot water radiators and clear out steam radiator vents to ensure a steady flow of warm air throughout your home. You should also take time to have your furnace and hot water heater checked by a professional to ensure that everything is working safely and efficiently. After all, there’s nothing worse than stepping into a cold shower during those chilly autumn months.

Rodent-Proof Your House

Your family members aren’t the only ones eager to snuggle up inside your house this fall. As the weather grows colder, a few furry friends may try to make your home their permanent residence. Mice, chipmunks, and other rodents will be seeking warmth in the coming fall and winter months, so be sure to seal off any entrances into your home.

Thoroughly examine the foundation around your home, looking for any holes or crack that may allow rodents to enter. Patch up those holes using steel wool or a steel metal sheet and seal off the opening completely.

Tend To The Yard

Now that summer is over and the blooming season is coming to an end, it’s time to treat your garden to a little TLC. Perhaps the trickiest part of this fall home maintenance checklist will be keeping up with all the leaves falling into your yard. Try your best to rake often during the season so you won’t be stuck with one large pile at the end of fall.

Additionally, autumn is a great time to aerate your yard in preparation for the next gardening season come springtime. Aerating your lawn will allow water, air, and nutrients easier access the roots of your grass and plants, making for a more fruitful bloom in spring and summer.

After you aerate your lawn, be sure to fertilize the grass as well. Do this a few weeks before the final mowing of the season to ensure that your grass stays healthy and beautiful even as it lies dormant over those long winter months.

other valuable tips:

Winterize Exterior Water Systems

Do you live in a region where the autumnal season comes with low temperatures and the occasional dusting of snow or freezing rain? If so, you’ll want to make sure your sprinkler and water system is properly winterized.

Draining your garden hoses and turning off the water for exterior faucets and sprinklers will prevent these fixtures from freezing and cracking as the temperature drops. Using an air compressor, you can easily blow out the water from your hoses and sprinklers, effectively winterizing the entire exterior water system.
