It is just as dangerous to take shortcuts by buying cheap safety gear or trying to use DIY protection. Here are five essential pieces of safety equipment every DIYer should have.
Safety Glasses
You should not be wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes, and prescription eyeglasses are not sufficient protection, either, if a nail or piece of wood is sent flying at your face. You must have a pair of proper safety glasses. Good safety glasses will cover your eyes, stay in place as you work, and will comfortably fit over your eyeglasses if necessary. Anti-glare and anti-fog features are a plus when you’re shopping for safety glasses.
A High-Quality Hard Hat
Everyone needs a good hard hat. Hard hats are essential whether you’re working with electrical equipment, at risk of burns, or could be hit by falling and flying objects. Hard hats have an outer shell that is typically made from fiberglass or plastic. The inner layer should fit the head snugly while providing impact absorption.
Select a hard hat that is comfortable. The more comfortable it is, the more likely you’ll continue wearing it while working. Choose a hard hat made from newer, lighter materials.
A carbon fiber hard hat, for example, is ultra-light even when there is a suspension system inside, while the best products provide better than average shock absorbing protection. The ideal models have a protective brim that shades your eyes while protecting someone upon impact from almost any direction.
Masks and Respirators
Opening the doors and windows may not be enough to protect your lungs. If you’re generating toxic fumes from paints and stains or creating a lot of wood dust, you want to be wearing a mask at a minimum to keep it out of your lungs. A respirator is essential when you’re working with toxic particulates like asbestos, fiberglass and mold.
Work Gloves
This is another case where people try to make do with what they have instead of wearing good-quality gear that can literally save them. Don’t try to wear disposable gloves when working on a project. Wear proper work gloves. The purpose of gloves like this is to help you keep a proper grip on what you’re working with so it doesn’t fall and to protect your hands from cuts and scrapes. DIYers should wear gloves that provide enough tactile sensation to work effectively but protect you from injury.

Work Boots
You really need to wear work boots instead of tennis shoes. You’ll appreciate proper work boots when they prevent a dropped tool from breaking your toes or save you from a trip to the hospital because you stepped on a nail. Work boots should provide mobility, a no-slip bottom and decent protection. Steel-toed boots offer the best protection but are the heaviest. Composite toe protection is almost as good but far lighter.
Good protective equipment is essential whether you’re a regular do-it-yourselfer or a professional skilled laborer. You can’t afford to be sidelined by an injury because you tried to use DIY safety equipment.
