Being a homeowner requires taking on a lot of different responsibilities.

These responsibilities include the management and maintenance of a wide array of different home systems.

-------------------------------------

One part of your plumbing system you may not see very often, but is still extremely important, is your septic tank. If your septic tank fails, you’ll know, and it won’t be pleasant. With that in mind, below are four ways to keep your septic tank in tip-top shape.

Reduce Water Consumption

According to the EPA, the average amount of water used by an individual in a single-family home is 70 gallons of water per day. All this water will eventually take its toll on a septic system. However, if you can cut down your water usage, you could put less strain on your septic system and help it to live a longer lifespan.

Try to conserve water as much as possible. For example, consider investing in low-flow toilets and faucets. When brushing your teeth or washing your hands, turn off the tap. When waiting for the shower water to heat up, place a bucket beneath the faucet, so you can use this water for watering the plants.

Don’t Use Your Toilet as a Garbage Can

There is a belief out there that your toilet can be used as a garbage disposal for nearly anything. However, this is simply not true. Flushing certain things down your toilet can do irrevocable harm to your septic system.

Things you should not flush down the toilet include grease, oil, dental floss, diapers, cat litter, paper towels and more. The only things that should be flushed are human waste and toilet paper. That’s it.

Be Careful with Your Landscaping

You should be aware that the landscaping you do in your yard could harm your septic system. For example, you don’t want to plant any trees anywhere near your tank. While no damage will be done immediately, it may be done years down the road.

The roots of a tree can begin to grow into the frame of a septic tank and do major damage to it. Know exactly where your tank is located and take precautions to protect it.

Perform Regular Maintenance

A septic tank also requires regular maintenance. This includes pumping the tank. On average, a septic tank should be pumped every three to five years. However, you may need to pump it more often depending on how much you use your plumping and the number of people in your home. Make sure to contact a plumber to pump the tank on whatever time schedule applies to your system.

Part of the responsibility of being a homeowner is taking care of your septic system. If you don’t, it could result in a smelly and disgusting disaster in your home, not to mention cost you bundles of cash. Don’t take any chances. Use the above suggestions and take good care of your septic system.
