The Newlyweds Guide to Homemaking

The Newlyweds Guide to Homemaking
  • Opening Intro -

    Marriage is not easy!

It can be difficult having moved from home where most things were done for you to your own home with each of you having your own ideas.

Both have come from different backgrounds and set of rules.  There are no rights and wrongs, so you have to try your best to accommodate each other, your differences, likes and dislikes and be patient with each other.

If you have not lived together before, no matter how long you have been in a relationship, this new journey will be one of new awareness of “things” you may not have known about each other.

Make your home a welcoming home where it’s not only “pretty” but one where you feel safe to voice your highs and lows.

And if there is something that your partner does that you don’t like speak about it without judgement but understanding, be gentle in your approach.

Remember that there might be things you have to hear that your partner does not like either. Don’t brew on something, speak about it and then kiss and make up.

The Secret is Compromise

Learn the art of compromise, make each other feel that their ideas are just as important as yours. You are building a home, a lifetime together, not every day is going to be perfect, don’t beat up on each other when you have one of those imperfect days.  Lean on each other, support each other and always talk about your life long plan as each need to know what direction they see themselves heading towards.

Plan holidays, date nights, walks together and weekend visits to family and friends. It does not mean that you have to stop being “spontaneous”, but communication is key.

Go For Cooking Lessons

Cooking is something that does not come natural to us. It is something that has to be learnt.  Today both wife and husband work, so being comfortable around the kitchen and being confident in your cooking comes from knowing what to put together. Cooking lessons would be a great way to learn how to put combinations together and having a great meal at the end of the day. This could be put onto the list of “what we would like as a wedding gift”.

There are so many places that offer affordable cooking lessons. Imagine the beautiful aromas coming from the kitchen when you get home after a long day and your partner has started the cooking. You can plan your meals on Sunday evening, so you know its set and you have all ingredients beforehand. There is nothing more romantic than cooking a good meal together.

Beautiful Decor

A beautiful home, no matter how small or large is the place that you must love and admire.  Rome was not built in a day so budget correctly. Go shopping together and see what you would like to decorate your home with and work towards getting all the extras that you have agreed on.  Whether it be appliances, bedding, towels, ornaments, photographs, art etc. do this together as you want your home to feel that it has a bit of each of your personalities tied into it.

Your home must feel like home and should be a place of comfort, from the moment you open the door.  You don’t have to have spent a lot of money on decor, it’s possible to find bargains!  There are many places you can go to and get great decor ideas and bring out your creative personalities into your space. Buy beautiful scented candles, have cuddly soft blankets near to the lounge area that you relax in while watching your favorite programs on TV.

Home Appliances

Appliances are the most expensive items in your home and should be invested in. Don’t go for the cheapest appliances on the market as you want them to last, take care of them and if they break don’t leave them broken, invest in appliance repairs.  There is nothing more frustrating than needing an appliance to find that it’s still broken when it is something that you need. Appliances keep the home running smoothly and will serve you well if you look after them as you should.

Create Opportunities to Make Memories

You have tried and tested your cooking skills and are confident around the kitchen, invite the in-laws or friends over to impress them with your new-found skills!  Having loved ones around to wine and dine, having good food, great conversations, lots of laughter and awesome company builds beautiful memories that you can talk about for years to come.

Have game evenings, these are great ways to bond and support each other against your friends as you become a “team”. Be creative in your home together, come up with ideas, don’t always leave it to your partner and never let things become routine or boring.

 Always Care For Each Other

Set the standard of how you treat each other. It is important to ask each other, “how was your day?”, or to acknowledge you have noticed something about them is different, maybe they are tired after the long walk home or you can see that they look hurt, something could have upset them during the day, ask what is wrong.  Never stop caring for each other.

Being married does not mean that we stop doing what we did when we were dating.  Marriage is a continuation of your relationship, you should be working harder in this new development.  Marriage is the most important extension of the relationship that you had, you never stop dating, kissing, loving or taking care of each other.

A happy home for a newlywed is one that is a home filled with love, warmth, understanding and loads of laughter.  Never go to bed angry, fall asleep holding hands or each other and your newlywed status will grow and grow until you become that loving “old married” beautiful devoted couple.
