The Welding Tools and Equipment You Need for a Home Improvement Project
  • Opening Intro -

There are a lot of DIY projects around your property that involve welding and plenty of them can add great value to the house itself.

All of these projects are both fun and challenging.

However, to be able to complete DIY projects around the house – those that involve welding in particular – you need the right tools for the job.

Welding tools and equipment are now more affordable than ever. Here are some of the basic tools you need to get started with your own welding projects.

A Welding Machine or Kit

There are several types of welding machines available on the market. For home use, a MIG welding machine is usually a good place to start. MIG welding is fairly easy to learn and can be mastered with practice & reading ‘Learn how to MIG weld’ guides. You can look at more sophisticated welding processes later, once you have mastered the MIG machine.

While a welding machine has many components, retailers now sell them as kits. You will have a complete set – with everything you need to start welding – in the kit. You can still customise the package to your liking. If you want a different welding tip, for example, you can pick up each component as an individual item.

Safety Gear

You should never weld without the proper safety gear. Safety should always be your main priority whenever you want to do a bit of welding. There are several basic safety items you must have for any DIY project.

Welding helmets are one of the must-have safety items for welders. There are quite a lot of options to choose from and don’t let the number of options intimidate you. As long as the helmet shell provides proper security and preferably comes with an auto darkening welding filter, you’re in good shape.

A pair of welding gauntlets is the next item to purchase. Never weld without wearing safety gloves. There are a lot of things that can go wrong and that pair of gloves will protect you from burns & radiation. A good pair of welding gloves, preferably Kevlar stitched, should still allow your hands to move freely while offering maximum heat protection.

Lastly, it is advised to wear a pair of work boots when you are welding, even when it is just a DIY project at home. The work boots will prevent more potential accidents – such as electrocution or getting your feet injured by sparks – from happening.

Supplies and Other Gear

Depending on the welding project you are undertaking, you will need some basic tools for certain tasks. You may already have pliers and screwdrivers at home, so there is no need to buy another set just for welding.

Welding supplies, on the other hand, are among the things you need to shop for. The spools of MIG wire needed for welding (depending on the type of welding machine you’ve purchased ), electrodes and filler material should all be available at your local welding or hardware store. You can also get them – and the equipment we talked about earlier – online through reputable retailers. With these items purchased, you are ready to start your DIY projects.
